DCPS open tomorrow with two hour delay tomorrow???? WTF?

Are they crazy? If the government is closed then they should be closed.

DC is a pretty poor city as a whole. I think a lot of kids rely on the school's free and reduced cost lunch and free breakfast. I ahve lived here my whole life and heard a previour superintendant say something to that effect and that makes it hard to cancel school.

How on EARTH are the buses going to get through? Everything is turning to sheets of ice.

Also...the roads are fine?

What are the side streets like in DC? And are the sidewalks shoveled? If not, the kids will be walking in the street, and that is very dangerous for them.

The side streets in my neighborhood got plowed early this morning. Sidewalks are always hit or miss, since it's up to individual homeowners. I find that residents of walking neighborhoods are better about clearing sidewalks than those in more car-dependent places.

This is a pretty serious problem in my opinion. Icy roads (and all the wet areas will be solid ice by tomorrow a.m.) mean that cars can't necessarily stop or be controlled in the normal way. This + kids (or anyone) walking in the street, which we all know everyone does, = someone getting hit.

And how are these kids getting to school?

She has made a lot of poor decisions lately, this one seems completely off the rails. The feds rarely completely close. DC schools should also be closed. The iced over roads are going to be worse in the am then they are right now.

my block neighborhood (upper NW) has not seen a plow.

I can not imagine that by tomorrow AM there would be a big difference from where things are right now given that everything that melted this afternoon is now frozen.

pure insanity. so glad my dd's charter school went against what dcps was doing and closed.

Email Rhee and Fenty if you are a DCPS parent, seriously. I think she somehow makes her look tougher when in fact it just makes her look like a loon. Did they not check with the federal govt plan or with metro re: the buses?
Anonymous
PP should say "she somehow thinks this decision makes her look tougher" typing too fast in my outrage. This is just crazy. So many kids in DC take metro bus, what are they supposed to do?
Anonymous
The poor kids will make it. They are hungry.

I guess her logic is that it should take everyone about two hours to get to school, if everyone leaves at the normal time. Hence the delay.
