| Hi! Love the caffeine/carbonation combo. I drink 3 cans/day and love it, but am addicted. The only time I stopped was Whole30, which curbed it but now am pretty much back to my usual. How bad is it for you? That being said, I don't consume many other bad things (alcohol, etc). |
|
Pretty sure it caused my kidney stones, which hurt more than birthing a nine pounder without drugs.
YMMV |
| My aunt had a six pack a day habit. Gave her excruciating kidney stones and anxiety issues she’s still trying to claw back from. No one needs that much caffeine. |

I joke that "Diet Coke is my only vice, though I may do some things that other people consider vices..."
Honestly, I looooove DC, but it's quite obviously an objectively terrible thing to put in your body. Sometime in HS or college, I read in a women's magazine that drinking more than one can of soda in a day is bad for your bones due to phosphates. I have no idea if that's true, but since then I've been drinking 1 can of DC/day (except when I was pregnant and when I did Whole30)...and I'm 42 and relatively healthy, so. Everything in moderation. You'll take my diet coke from me on my death bed and not before... |
| Moons ago I drank them daily and it aided in my weight loss. It was helpful to drink something calorie-free other than water. |
I drank a lot of diet coke since the day it was put on the market. I have osteoporosis, probably due to not enough calcium over the years and the phosphorous in colas draws calcium out of one's bones. My nutrition class professor shared that info and I chose to disregard. |
A 12 ounce Diet Coke has 42 mg of caffeine. Regular Coke has 32 mg of caffeine. A cup of coffee has 95 mg of caffeine. Your aunt's habit was equal to drinking three cups of coffee per day. It's a moderate amount of caffeine. The FDA says that adults can safely drink up to 400 mg of caffeine per day. Regular Coke can contribute to kidney stones. Any drink with a lot of fructose contributes to kidney stones. Diet Coke does not contribute to kidney stones, because it doesn't contain fructose. Diet Coke may be hard on kidney health for other reasons, though. |
| OP I drink Coke Zero all day long and have no other vices, as you say. I’m 58 and no adverse consequences yet. I‘M normal weight and totally healthy. I try to give it up sometimes but I always go back. Water is so boring. I read an article that linked it to dementia, but if that hasn’t made me change my habits..... |

People are making extremely low cal brownies with them! I don’t drink Diet Coke but I’d love to try the recipe once I have all of the ingredients. It’s 74 calls for the whole pan!
This calorie count includes the one I ate!! Recipe:. 4 tbsp of cocoa powder (40 calories) 2 egg whites (34 calories) 6 tbsp oat fiber Pinch of baking soda Pinch of salt Pinch of xantham gum Splash of lemon juice Sugar substitute (I used 8 packs of Splenda) For best results, add 1/4th tsp of glucomannan if you have it Diet soda (didn't measure it, but it was enough to make the batter as thin as normal cake batter.) Optional additions: 50 grams of fat free Greek yogurt for 26 calories. (This made them a bit more fudgie, so I recommend!) Instant coffee Vanilla flavoring Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. (Check at 20, cook longer if still too fudgie.) |
| I adore DC but sorry, that brownie recipe sounds awful. |
For me it was the opposite. The first time I tried to lose weight in my life the only change I made was drinking water instead of diet coke and the extra weight melted off me. I know in theory it doesn't make sense since Diet Coke doesn't have calories, but there was something about the aspartame or whatever that was making my body hold on to fat. |
It does make sense. Fake sugar can trigger an insulin response in many people. You can’t lose weight when insulin is high. So that “zero calorie” drink you drink all day can make it impossible to shed the pounds if it’s sweet. |
| The aspartame in diet cokes caused a host of digestive issues for me. I realized it AFTER I quit drinking it. |
| I didn't drink a ton of it but when I was working on quitting, I bought those little 6 oz (?) cans. It's the first couple of sips that are the best anyway. |
|
I used to drink a ton of Diet Coke, diet root beer, diet crush, whatever. Probably 2 a day and not more because otherwise I’d have to pee every 10 minutes.
I quit when I got pregnant with my first child. Now when I try to drink them they are so disgusting that I’m disgusted with myself I ever drank so much. OP, have you ever tried quitting for just 6 months or so? I think you’ll realize how bad it really is. I do, however, think regular coke is delicious, but only ever have a sip every now and then because that stuff will kill you too. |
