I think parents want the “qualities and privileges” that come commensurate with how incredibly expensive FCPS is for taxpayers.

Can you explain?

I find our property taxes to be quite reasonable, relative to other places we've lived.

Taxes are extremely low in this area. I just looked up a 2.5 million home in Vienna and they paid $9,693 in 2023. In my hometown a 1 million home paid $24,134 in taxes in 2023.

Your data sounds incorrect. Isn’t the property tax rate around 1.1%?

That cannot be accurate. The tax rate in 2024 is 1.1250 so a $2.5M home has a total of $28K in taxes this year.

The issue that I see is that parents want what is best for their child. However, we teachers simply cannot provide anything approaching this. We can only provide the very basics. There are too many children and many of the children are coming to school unprepared.

One way to help parents understand this is to think about school lunch. Consider the nutrition and quality of the food offered. What the exception of a few years during the Obama presidency, the food is low nutrition and at best low-medium quality. The fresh fruit is a small and mealy red delicious apple. The pizza is full of sugar. Chocolate milk is the exception.

Breakfast is almost entirely without a source of protein. The food the children are served by the school is safe and will keep them alive. It’s essentially prison-level quality food. It is not what an involved parent who cares about the nutrition of their child would choose for them. The child that comes to school with a packed and nutritious lunch from home will be miles ahead in nutrition than their peers who are eating the school lunch.

It is the same with what occurs in the classroom. The child that has had plenty of reading and enrichment at home will come to school miles ahead of the student who has gotten all of their education from FCPS. The child that has outside tutoring will master the concepts while the child that only had exposure during the school day will only have a rough appreciation for what was taught.

This is validating because I’ve always gotten a prison-like vibe from many aspects of FCPS, especially the crap lunch food including the salad bar, and the way parents are not welcomed into school since Covid.

What you say is true and very sad because many working parents don’t have time to augment their child’s education to the extent that you suggest, particularly taking off Monday afternoons 7x/year on top of all of the numerous days off to “educate” them.

If FCPS places this much weight on what parents should be doing and their goal is to provide the basic, bare minimum despite all of the time afforded to them, at the expense of what’s best for elementary students, for PD and training, we have a deeply dysfunctional school system that will continue to tank and provide a costly disservice to the public that funds their existence.

Sorry, I looked at a house just built from an old property.

Just looked at a diff house in Vienna that is 1.875 million and in 2023 their taxes 17,704. My point being is that people who buy these homes can afford a few thousand more in taxes. So a house in my hometown which costs less pays more in taxes.

That $28,000 would go a long way in private school tuition. And my point is if you’re being asked to fork over $30,000 ostensibly to educate your children, you have a reason to not be treated like your views are irrelevant, wanting a five day school week is a HUGE ASK, that your kid not be educated in a trailer is unacceptable, wanting an IEP adhered to requires a lawyer…

And that’s before bonds…

FCPS is expensive but refuses to act like it is.

Wow, this is a very sad, ill-informed post.

Education is for more than just your child. Educating our COMMUNITY is important.

That cannot be accurate. The tax rate in 2024 is 1.1250 so a $2.5M home has a total of $28K in taxes this year.

Well the whole $28000 doesn’t go to FCPS.

The average house in FC is $700,000 which is about 30% of the price you quoted.

Exactly. I was just going to post the same thing. $28k tax assessment on a $2+million home is not all going to the schools.

The tax rate, no matter the valuation of the home, is still reasonable.

Most of it do though.

FCPS 2024-25 budget is 2.6 billion.
FCPS property tax 3.5 billion.

This person paying 21k to FCPS education. This many moneys.

AOPS better value for many fewer hour of the education and many less moneys.

Intelligent people realize that it is critical to the success of society for us to have strong public schools, and they are happy to see tax money go to public schools, even if they if they dont have children in the school system.

My sister and her husband do not have children. They pay over 20K in property taxes in Fairfax County.
My parents' kids graduated from school between 25 and 35 years ago. They pay over 25K in property taxes in Fairfax County.
My nephew and his wife do not have children, nor do they plan to have children. They pay at least 10K in property taxes to Fairfax County.

None of those listed above complain at all about their taxes helping pay for public schools because they are intelligent enough to understand how important public education is to our community.

What a bunch of dummies. What Redfin says your home is worth and what the county assesses the value of your home to be are two very different things. Your taxes are based on the county's assessment.

So we’ve circled back to “I could go to private school with my tax money.”

Then sell your home and go private.
