Wait, what? I'm from New Orleans. Are we going to contend, like Texas, it is not the South? And yes, Texas is Texas. I just is.

I am Catholic and thought that Mary signified "Catholic" until I read this thread. But then again, growing up, I didn't really know non-Catholics. After I moved I did but when I meet Marys here, they are either Catholic, Episcopalian or Southern. Sometimes two of the three.

It's the part where "Mary" is PART of the name. Try to keep up

Well, most Marys everywhere have at least 1 middle name. But most women only go by their first name. Thus, Mary Jane Doe would be called "Mary" only. In DC.

In the south, do women go by their first and middle names - Mary Jane? Or, does it mean FULL name is Mary Jane Cayleigh Doe??

Yes (New Orleans person here). Middle names are only used when you are in trouble.

Someone has posted Gentry Elizabeth more than once on DCUM. I keep thinking this must be a country musician’s baby girl’s name.

What the heck kind of name is Mobely?

Sigh, it’s a very common southern surname. In both black and white southern families.

Just because you aren’t familiar with it, doesn’t give you permission to mock it. I did the same thing when I was an ignorant 18 year old who encountered common Jewish surnames in college. You aren’t being clever, you just aren’t familiar with what is a very common name in a culture you don’t know.

Maria is literally the most popular name on earth.

Fun Fact: In Catholic parts of Italy and Spain almost every single woman is Mary _______ and they go by the blank. When they sign their names, there's a little M (like a superscript number in scientific notation) and then their name. It's crazy but cool.

uh, yeah. There are a few dc based lobbyists with this name. And a couple of lawyers. I'm not going to name fields but hell yes! All are catholic and/or Southern. Now that I think about it, one is a New England Catholic Mary who is also of Italian descent...no idea how she got into new england.

This opinion is unpopular with me. Thinking about what little Callaway and Saunders will do at their first frat party makes me shudder

I could probably think of more. Only some of these are Catholic; many/most aren't. It is a Southern thing.

I know Mary Virginia!!!

Southern Protestants I have known:
Mary Beth- my aunt
Mary Katherine- HS classmate
Mary Margaret-Suitemate in college

And I knew soooo many girls growing up with their mother's maiden names as their first names. Like: Carter, Fraser, etc. These were the richest families kids. They literally lived on former plantations.

What kind of insensitive question is this? If a woman had a hyphenated surname you wouldn’t ask if she “goes by both.” Use the name people prefer you to use and don’t be a dick about it.

No, not everyone with a double barreled name uses both. My MIL is Mary Pamela and goes just by Pam. It’s not a stupid question.

Having two names like this is southern. Mary is not southern. I know several Mary’s who just go by Mary. None are southern.

We were specifically discussing the Mary + ones.
