Travel and social class

Well in the book it’s a college student hearing that her new roommate grew up going to Christmas markets in Europe, skiing out west every spring break, and vacations on Sea Island every summer.

Tipped her off immediately to the roommate being from a high class family.

What is a high class?

Then there’s old money travel. That’s going to Mill Reef, Little Dix Bay or Lyford Cay in in Caribbean. Skiing is at Vail or Jackson Hole. For summers, it’s spending the month at your family’s house at some small New England enclave that most people have never heard of like Dark Harbor or Fenwick.

Any schmuck with money can go to St. Barts or Nantucket.

I've done all that with friends. Why is that "high class"? Whatever that is, I am definitely not. It is more like adventure/intellectual travel.

There's also something with old money where the houses may be big, but often times they're a bit run down or have no air conditioning. Not flashy at all. I grew up in New England and knew some families like this. Nobody was going to St. Barts, but they all had their rambling houses in Maine.

So boring.

This could be rich person stuff - do they own the Sea Colony house? Do they fly first class to Europe and stay in the nicest hotels? Do they go to Aspen instead of slumming it at a less lux resort? - or it could be middle class if it is coach and rentals.

Skiing out west doesn’t have to be expensive. It really depends on where you go. And most middle class families can afford to rent a house for a beach vacation for a week or even two.

middle class families can't afford the time off for multiple long vacations a year.

2 is normal though or I should say, common.

I doubt people are going to a Christmas market every single year.

2 trips that involve air travel is not common for a middle class family (unless you have a very expansive view of middle class)

I come from a blue collar Northeast family of nurses, cops, and firefighters. Pretty common for a few flights a year. Disney every year at least once. Often another Florida trip. Vegas once a year (without kids).

Why would they? A broad spectrum of people go to both of those places.

Are you new here? This is a DCUM about social class and travel. Every thread on social class and travel devolves into a discussion of Portugal and Disney.

I know DCUM’s view on disney, but what’s the issue with Portugal?

It’s “basic”... according to dcum.

Portugal's tourism industry might take a major hit due to its national airline being an utter disaster. (2nd most DOT complaints against non-US airlines. Air Canada is number 1.)

I wonder what will replace it as the destination DCUM loves to hate.

IMO Lisbon nicer than Madrid or Paris.

Well, DCUM is stupid. I’ve been to 30 countries and lived in 3 countries, and I love Portugal. I also love Disney.

Come at me.

That is a pretty small number of countries honestly.

He literally walks to an airport be it private or commercial, and boards. He has been to 43 countries in 4 years As I speak, he is heading to Quito, and then to the Galapagos Islands to explore and take a private cruise on a yacht. I am his daughter and cannot do such things. I know he is of a different class.

Not really that impressive honestly. Many of us have done more than 43 countries in 4 years!

I myself have been to 274 countries already. Half work and half play or so.

Sad. You must be poor. I just got back from my 327th country last week.

Are we supposed to be impressed? Many of us have done 327 countries in the past year alone!

Eh. Unless you've seen our little blue planet from space, you haven't really traveled yet. You just don't realize how any of us lack any perspective until you experience 17 sunrises and 17 sunsets all in one day.

Space is new money.

So there is a big difference between old money and new money and geographic/regional differences even within those two categories.

Class is an entirely separate thing. No one would accuse the Kardashians of being high class, and they are undeniably wealthy.
