This has been the flag of limited or libertarian government since at least the 70s. It's laughable that another PP is trying to argue that everyone flying it is a history buff and they all happen to be really taken with the same minor player from the Revolutionary War.

Whats’s wrong with being a libertarian or in favor of limited government? Those are perfectly mainstream American viewpoints. I know this might surprise you, but there are tens of millions of Americans with these viewpoints, who express their opinions peacefully (such as, with a license plate).

NP here. I’ve got one on my car now, with no plans to change it. The Gadsden flag is an honorable historic American flag. Why would I get rid of it just because some not great people also like it? The KKK carries plenty of regular American flags at their rallies. Does that sully the Stars and Stripes for you?

What drew you to the Gadsden flag?

The history behind it is interesting (the motif can be traced back to Benjamin Franklin], I think it expresses a very American sentiment (we can be dangerous as a country, so leave us alone), and I think it looks better than the regular, boring Virginia license plate.

If people are put off of it because some asshats have used it for their own purposes, that’s their problem, not mine.

What’s your problem with American service members putting a historic American flag on their license plates or porches?

I’ve got some small “l” libertarian beliefs, and believe that, in general, our government has become too intrusive and large. No, never really got into the Tea Party. My political beliefs overlap with some of theirs, though.

I’d probably describe myself as a National Review conservative.

I liked the old-style Virginia plates that had the center of state flag on them, in the middle of the numbers. “Sic Semper Tyrannis”, with a Citizen standing over the body of a slain Tyrant, foot atop his body, with knife in hand. Now THAT was a great plate. Way better than being warned not to step on a snake, it actually showed unambiguously what will happen to tyranny.

I guess Northam was a little uneasy with that imagery and the DMV eliminated it in the redesign, haha.

FYI, there are lots of unions and union members in VA. “Right to Work” states just mean employees don’t HAVE to join a union. It doesn’t mean they can’t join one or form one.
