Agreed. And I strongly suspect that they will send elementary schools back on 2/16. Ziegler said that he's expecting all teachers who want a vaccine to have their first dose completed by next week. By the week of the 16th, many teachers will have had their second dose, and Morse advised Ziegler to consider prioritizing the teachers returning to classrooms first. Not sure if they'll be able to do that or not, but the entire workforce (those who want it) should be vaccinated by 3/3 at the rate they're going with the pod.

The vaccination rate is entirely beside the point as it was never a factor of reopening. I mean it’s nice for teachers that it happened but in terms of them holding off or making plans around who has gotten it or when , that’s not going to happen.

DP. I agree it was not a factor in reopening. But since vaccines are happening, and returning some staff on 2/16 does make it harder for them to get their second dose (since Ziegler said they cannot hold the POD with extended hours) I can see certain board members voting for a 3/3 return for all. The only question is which motion gets 5 votes.

Yes. 3/3 is for sure happening, the elementary date is the only one in question. If they need rhe nurses to staff the POD, it makes sense just to send all 3/3. For elementary hybrid kids that is only 4 in person class days of difference. But if they say 2/16 I know my first grader would be happy, I can hear her in a breakout room right now with her peers sh*t talking DL, she’s over it. (My 5th grader loves it though)

Does your 5th graders likes DL because of the freedom ?
In my opinion, the older kids love DL because of the freedoms they have, they can be laying in bed, eating and using the bathroom without permission.

No. She likes it because for her school has been a major source of anxiety and here she feels completely relaxed. She’s participating in ways that are comfortable for her, making a LOT of progress, and feels so much more able to learn because the anxiety is gone. She’s a kid who hates specials, hates how loud and chaotic school is, and she is soooo much more dialed in and happy doing it from home. She has some learning disabilities that DL has been very great for; lots of time for 1:1 support with her support teacher if needed in a breakout and man, they hold her accountable. She doesn’t take advantage at all; she has a desk in our kitchen and does all her work there. She’s definitely not doing it from bed. Kids should be able to use the restroom whenever they need no matter what though.

Just 7?

But why is DL getting just a bad word if kids love it?

Because parents dislike it and their kids aren’t here speaking for themselves. But also, not all my students do love it, they just have families who cannot take the risk because they’re in the hardest hit community. A lot of them have had CoVID themselves or have multigenerational families at home who can’t take off work if they get sick or have paid leave, so getting CoVID is catastrophic . They have good reasons for not picking it.

Oh, also, they’ve seen the setup at school and know it’s going to be a PITA so they’re just choosing to stay home where it’s comfortable and they have more freedom and won’t have to sit masked and spaced all day behind plexiglass

Just wish the schools administrators were as open as you are.

Anyone who wants to DL can. Its time for the DL parents to stop hijacking the return to school threads. You get your way regardless, let the 35,000 kids who chose hybrid have a turn too.

Nobody has hijacked it? We all support the 3/3 return

Not the lady saying she only has 7 students returning or the lady expounding on the many reasons her 5th grader adores DL. Just because they admit its happening does not mean they support it or agree with it.

That’s me and I said in BOTH I am happy to return! Someone asked why only 7 kids on 3/3 and I said I wish I had more. My first grader hates DL and I am happy if she goes 2/16. They asked why my 5th grader likes it and I explained why. None of those were saying I don’t support hybrid or the 3/3 return. I will go back in and teach happily and my kids will too although the 5th grade less happily. You need to chill!

Actually, that's not what Ziegler said. He said that he cannot hold the POD with extended hours, but he did not attribute that to lack of staffing. LCPS is not running the POD, it's the Loudoun Department of Health, in consultation with the VA Dept of Health. They set the hours, because someone from the county health department needs to be there to oversee the handling of the vaccine. That is a mandate from the health department and there's nothing that Ziegler can do about the hours, even if he had 1,000 nurses.

I fully understood that. The issue is that staff who have to teach in-person starting on 2/16 will have a hard time going to the POD during the work day for their second shot. It is one of the arguments for waiting for 3/3 for all grades.

I'm sorry. I completely misread your post.

Although it may cause ES hybrid teachers & staff to shuffle schedules around, cover classrooms for each other, and keep the subs busy, it's worth it. We've had to rearrange schedules due to missing classroom time for the first shot and I think parents understand. It can be managed.

I don't disagree but some board members feel that 3/3 for all is better. That's all I was saying.

Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. I guess we'll see what happens in a week. Wish they had just voted so we know where things stand. I don't think they'll have any new information by next Tuesday.

Yeah, I watched the meeting and don't understand why they didn't suspend the rules to vote last night. They seemed to pretty much have a consensus minus a slight disagreement on dates. Everyone would be happier just knowing. I feel confident it will be 3/3 for secondary, its the ES families in limbo.
