MIT
Stanford
UChicago
Duke
Northwestern
Johns Hopkins
Cal Tech

In fact, laid out like this, this grouping is probably stronger than the Ivy League...

This grouping doesn't exist and makes no sense. MIT and Stanford belong to the widely accepted group of T5 - HYPMS. It's not useful or meaningful in anyway to group them with the less prestigious schools such as UChicago or Northwestern.

Dp. You’re being obtuse. These are widely accepted “Ivy Plus” schools that are on par with the Ivy League. It makes no less sense to group MIT and Stanford with the rest than to group Harvard and Yale with the likes of Penn and Dartmouth.

Not to mention both Northwestern and UChicago > Johns Hopkins, in any case.

USNWR is trash. Go with the global rankings that aren't so US specific:

Both have JHU > NW, Duke, Dartmouth, and Brown.

No one was even referencing rankings. So then by this measure you’d say Cornell and Michigan are better schools than JHU? Got it.

Duke is highly overrated. Number one predictor of admittance is the household income of parents.

Agreed, they built their entire image on being Princeton lite, but they have no actual standout programs and only became big because of basketball.

That’s is correct. You’re catching on......

Absolutely no one thinks Hopkins is better than NWU, Dartmouth, Duke or Brown.

If there were only allowed to be 8 colleges. Hopkins would be one as the nations top research institution. Those others would be closed along with all the ivys other than Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

Isn’t it primarily Hopkins’ medical school that gets them that number? Not so much the undergrad?

The Ivy League is a football league. Nothing more, nothing less. The geography of the schools (aka in the NE, where historic wealth has been in the USA) and their age have made them popular with rich white people since their conception. That has meant that they have long-standing connections into rich circles. That means lots of money, which means great research opportunities ... ergo ... they’re desirable.

But at the end of the day, it’s an athletic league. It’s not some sort of designation that can be earned by any university that fulfills certain criteria.

People need to get the fk over the Ivy League.

God this canard is so, so very stupid.

“Ivy League” has very common vernacular meaning around the globe. That’s undeniable. To equate it with “PAC 10” is completely ridiculous. Words have meanings societies assign to them which is frequently beyond their origin. Get over it.

But at the end of the day, it’s an athletic conference. Yes, the schools are all considered excellent, but what binds them is the athletic league. Nothing else.

No. It isn’t. It has another meaning to most of the world, rightly or wrongly. The fact that you feel compelled to make that point is the proof it isn’t true.

No one ever says “The PAC 10 is just a sports league”. Understand?

For the record, the Ivy League bonds together with much more than sports. Their admissions offices meet each year, they share resources, and they even release all their RD admissions decisions on the same day. What does that have to do with sports?
