Pregnancy following uterine polyp removal

Anonymous
Have been ttc for about 2 years, although it's further complicated with the fact my husband works out of the country every other month. Had an endometrial polyp removed in April, however my gyno said I could not begin to do infertility workup until a year after the procedure for it to be covered by insurance. Is this correct?

Any info appreciated--thanks!

I guess that would depend on your insurance. This was not an issue for me. I was about to start my IVF cycle and a polyp was discovered and removed. I proceeded with that cycle and conceived. Prior to pursuing ART I had another polyp removed and it did not present a barrier to me getting coverage for a work up for IF.

That said, there is a belief that polyps prevent conception - or can prevent conception - so perhaps the gyno suspects a polyp might have been to blame for your troubles ttc. Even so, I would absolutely check with your insurance company. This sounds like an unusual policy.

That would really surprise me. I would check with your insurance company. Usually, they just take you at your word for how long you've been "trying". I would see an RE, and not depend on your gynecologist.

I have been ttc for 3 years I am now 40 and feel I am running out of time. I have had terrible 2-4 month long periods sleeping on garbage bags bleeding so bad, unable to work or go anywhere and then I will go 3-4 months no period and terrible acne. I had a hysterosonogram today and was told I have many polyps in my uterus and this has been causing the bleeding and probably the infetility as they block tubes and cervix or dont allow fertilized egg to attach. I was told by radiologist I will need a DNC. My question is how long after finding out about the polyps will my dr wait to schedule surgery and has anyone gotten pregnant after having polyps removed ? My insurance covers IVF but what are odds of pregnancy the old fashioned way after al of this? I am very scared and worried. Thank you.

Have been TTC for over a year with no luck. Finally went to a RE and she did an ultrasound where she thought she might've seen something suspicious. With my history of irregular bleeding (about a week before my period actually starts), she suggested a HSG (which was awful). Had that done and there was a small filling defect in the uterine cavity. My RE thought it was probably a polyp and we scheduled the hysteroscopy. Had that done a week ago (which was painless other than five people trying for over an hour to get an IV in) and two polyps were cut out. Reading all these posts, I'm hopeful that the removal of my polyps will help with the infertility as well my irregular bleeding and acne. We shall see!

I have a question for all of you who have had a polyp removed. How big was the polyp? I just found out I have one that is 9 mm. Do any of you know if polyps have to be a certain size in order to cause fertility issues or to warrant removal? Thanks!

I had one removed recently that was approximately 2.5 cm, plus some little "pre-polyps". I wasn't TTC yet (they were found by chance when looking into another issue), but my gyn knew that I was planning on starting soon, so he wanted to remove them for that reason, among others.

I am so glad I found this thread. I'm 40 and we've been TTC for quite some time. We had an HSG which indicated a fibroid or polyp, then we got pregnant, then had a miscarriage. I had an office hysteroscopy today and they found the polyp was blocking my left tube, so I'm scheduled to get it removed in April. We are waiting to get this removed so we can start fertility treatments. I'm happy to hear so many women got pregnant after polyp removal. I'm hoping we will have a successful pregnancy soon! Please continue with the positive stories!

At age 37, I was able to conceive my first child the first month trying. I had a very healthy pregnancy. AF returned last August when son was 8 months (I was BF) and it didn't feel right. Everyone said it's always heavier and more painful after childbirth. It was so painful that I went to the doc and had a vaginal ultrasound in Oct. Doc said everything looked fine (although later found that the tech questioned a large grey area). My severe cramping and heavy flow continued. 6 months of TTC, I just knew something was wrong. We started fertility testing. 1st test was HSG. Tubes were open but uterus showed a mass in 2/3 of my uterus. Doc said it's best to remove the fibroid/Polyp immediately. She said it's best to schedule post-AF but pre-ovulation. Today I had a hysteroscopy w/surgical removal and D&C. Doc said the mass was a large polyp and she was able to remove it all. The surgery was much easier than I thought. I've had light cramping and bleeding. Doc expected me to be fine tomorrow but said to just take it easy. She said to wait until June to TTC again. I turn 39 in June. I have a follow up in two weeks. I'm hoping to update a BFP in July!
