^^ This was meant for the PP.

but it's completely optional for the clubs on the rec level they just decided to also do it by birth year. It's easier for clubs to manage if they are all on the same age group system across different programs. Also less confusing for parents going from rec to travel. |
SYA does school grade on the rec side and birth year on the travel side. |
It doesn’t affect my kids. But U11 means “under 11” which is different than 11. You are dumb if you think U11 means 11 when it means never older than 11. |
My kid started U9 Fall season the month before he turned 9. It did not used to mean this BEFORE the change to birth year. It used to mean “9 and under”. Like pp, I have a U15 that just turned 14 2 weeks ago and will be playing U15 at 14 the entire Fall season. The most negative aspect for us (besides having 1/2 the team play HS while he’s in 8th) is moving to the LATE practice times during MS when he has to be out the door by 6:50am. If it were still calendar year he would be getting home at 8:45pm instead of close to 10pm. |
| @u16 at 14 years old fall season |
“U” has always meant “under” regardless of cutoff. If your birthdate within the age cutoff of “U12” meant that if your kid would be 13, even for just one day of the season, your kid is not eligible to play U12. It has always worked that way. |
Got it. U11 means u11 and under. Let me rephrase or clarify the statement. Since my player is 10 throughout the 2019-2020 soccer season, I welcome the change so she plays u10 the entire season because she’s 10. If anytime during the soccer season a player turns 11, then the player should play U11. Meanwhile her teammates have already turned 11 and it’s a big advantage at the younger age groups. |
School start times vary across counties. Some county middle school start times are not until after 8:00am. The world doesn’t revolve around your situation. |
Everyone has to deal with a cutoff. June, July and August kids have to deal with the same “disadvantage” as your kid does now. Even though you’re not saying it directly at least your being honest with “it’s good for my kid and eff the August losers”. |
Hmmm...seeing 98% of the kids at our big county club are in the same county public system and the CLUB sets the practice times—-yes, it does. If the Clubs responded accordingly (which talking to friends in 3 other local counties—they have not) it would be okay. |
What does practice time have to do with age cutoff? Your club can adjust to their most popular school start times. That is a club problem. |
| ^ they do. They favor the older kids on the 9th/8th grade teams. The younger kids get doubly screwed. They never adjusted practice schedules. U15 times stayed the same, even when some players were now a year younger than they were in the past due to birth year change. |
My point was pretty obvious. The top 1-2 players of a YNT roster may be exceptional and US Soccer overlooks them playing high school and other non-save. But the general expectation is that YNT players play DA and don't play High school. |
