For the benefit of 1/4 of the kids? |
| It would annoy me if this happens because we got kind of screwed by the changeover in the first place, and I'll be irritated if it was all for nothing. |
I was a proponent of the switch to calendar year when it happened because of ease of use, but the reality is, the school year is better. When the kids are young, it keeps them happier to play with their classmates. When they get older, the combined age groups are a mess with calendar year and for those that are elite, they can play up anyway. As for matching the international rules, same argument applies, the elite players can play the grouping calendar doesn't matter. |
play *up* |
Not because we think our kid is the next Mia Hamm but because it is their prerogative. If they want to change it, that is their right. If you want your kid to play soccer in the US, you go along with the age groups. It's really simple and not as you stated. Seriously. |

In all the years my kids have played travel soccer they have only ever had 3 teammates who even went to the same school.
All this handwringing over “playing with friends” couldn’t be more overreacting poppycock. Sorry about your October born kid. You never cared about the July and August kid before when your kids had the right Birthday. |
| maybe for recreational programs that want to switch back fine but I doubt it for the higher-level programs. Yeah right development academy is going to switch out of birth year. Sure thing buddy |
| Going on grade would be stupid. You could have kids who are 2 years old in the same group. It really matters in the younger groups. They select on early development. You would lose event more kids. |
| Someone provide some links. US is a mess right now. They are having problems fill coaching slots because of the Chicago centric thing. I can not image they have the bandwidth for something like this. |
| It makes more sense than age year, but it's going to hurt my kids who are in HS now. |
One of the most abused, misused, misunderstood tools in youth soccer. A player should only play up on a team if they would still be one of the top 2-3 players on that team. Instead, we take a great player in their own age group and play them up to their own level of mediocrity. |
I think for rec it makes my son. I had kids in travel and kids in rec. One of them had her entire team, all of them, from her high school. Because rec teams are formed based on location, not talent. |

Where exactly have you been hearing this? I cannot imagine US Soccer would put everyone through a change again so soon, esp given that the rest of the world uses the current system.
Until I see it from the source, this just a rumor. |
We are with you. Every player on my daughter's team is a year in front of her in school. She would be thrilled to play with kids in her own grade again. |
No. You never could. It was calendar year still. A kid held back still has to play within the age limits in travel. |
