Rewatching Sex and the City

TELL IT PP!!!!!!!!! Steve was such a step down for Miranda. She settled in a ridiculous way, all because she got knocked up (which you’d think she wouldn’t do, if her prior actions on the show served as a prediction of future ones).

I also agree with another PP who said that Aidan was a pushover. Honestly couldn’t see his appeal.

Why was he a step down, because he made less money than she did?

DP. OH COME ON. The premise of the show was oversexed women in their 30s trying to become kept women of rich men. Obviously Miranda was an attorney and had more going for her but she had only slightly more depth than her friends. By their standards, Steve is a fail open.

Because he was a bartender. Fun job when you’re young or while you’re pursuing another career but I don’t recall him having any other ambitions.

Well Samantha and Miranda both ended up with men who weren’t rich. Charlotte left the rich go for a lawyer who wasn’t exactly rich. Only Carrie ended up with a rich guy. All of the women, with the exception of Charlotte (toward the end) worked (lawyer, writer, publicist). So again, you didn’t watch this show.

Why are you defending the show so much? Did you emulate them and sleep around and are trying to justify it?

Oh I’m so sorry. I sometimes forget that people don’t enjoy being proven wrong and when faced with proof contrary to them they get offended. Then they try to spin their thoughts and argument as an insult. Nope, and I’m sorry to continue to upset you but, I didn’t sleep around. I enjoyed and still enjoy the show. I took it for the fluff it was and it didn’t have an impact on me. I hope this helps you to feel better.

See, I loved it exactly because the women made such bad choices sometimes! It's fun to watch a train wreck. That's why people love celebrity gossip and the tabloids. Who wants to watch a bunch of perfectly behaved people for 6 seasons straight?

I also liked the depiction of the friendship exactly because it was so flawed and some character behaviors were so crappy and selfish, but ultimately the women stuck together anyway. I've had the same small, tight-knit group of friends since I was a teenager, and looking back at our friendship now that we're all around 40, sometimes we took turns being little selfish jerks!

+1 Yeah I don’t get the people talking about it doesn’t pass a smell test. It’s a fluff show meant for entertainment. Some of you people have no idea how to unclench and relax.
Hey, you can have a fluff show where people learn a little bit about themselves and do better step by step. It all depends on what kind of fluff you prefer.

Where’d you get that Harry wasn’t rich? I always assumed he did well, now I’m wondering why.

I'm not pp but I'm guessing she got that impression because he wasn't a Mayflower WASP like Trey.

Harry was very affluent, but he wasn’t Manhattan wealthy the way Trey was.

I’m the poster who made the original comment. And this is exactly my reasoning. He didn’t seem to be old money wealthy like Trey. He wouldn’t be able to afford the apartment Charlotte received in the settlement. I also looked at Miranda, and while she wasn’t struggling, she couldn’t afford to stay in Manhattan with her family on a lawyers salary.

Aww. I liked Steve! He was so sweet.

Unpopular opinion but I liked Trey and I think all of their issues were caused by Charlotte. She could have avoided that whole dumpster fire of a marriage if she hadn't gotten married to a guy she knew for a month.

I liked Steve, too

I think it was clear that Charlotte jumped into marrying Trey because she thought that he checked all her boxes - only, she didn't know him well enough (or know herself well enough) to know what would be missing. The whole thing was seeing her move from having this list of what she thought she wanted, that conformed to her idea of what a perfect life would look like, to falling in love with the slobbish Jewish guy who adored her and who she came to love.

Oh yes, that I agree with. Harry was adorable and I was glad she came to realize how special he was, even if he wasn't as handsome and refined as Trey. But the whole thing where Trey was some monster - I believe she said in that therapy session that he stole her ability to feel love - lady, you're the one who wanted him to propose after like three weeks.

Also I'm not a super sexual person by any means but even I think you need to have sex with someone at least once before you promise God and the state of NY to only have sex with him for the rest of eternity. So, I did agree with Bunny when she came for Charlotte during the divorce settlement hearings. Yes, Charlotte did rush into marriage and no, she didn't take it seriously. She rushed into it after he bought her a Cartier watch, she cheated on him, she asked him to separate, and then only wanted to get back together after they had sex. I loved Charlotte as a character but the way she handled the entire marriage was pathetic. Should have just never gotten into that, girl!

Anywho, back to Steve. He was adorable! Kind of dorky looking and certainly not as ambitious as Miranda but he was a really upstanding guy. I always cry when I'm watching reruns and they air the episode (it's like one of the last few episodes) where his mom develops dementia and he takes care of her (and Miranda does, too, of course). I don't think he was a bum who mooched off her, I think they were just very different. She came from uptight Main Line parents and he was the son of a couple alcoholics from Queens. Just different backgrounds.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk?

I totally agree with you re Steve. I know several women who are partners at Big 4 consulting firms with husbands who are SAHD or have unsexy, non-high-paying jobs. They are all super Type A women who married nice laid back guys that are hands on with the kids and happy to run the household instead of chasing careers. None of those women "settled".
