Rewatching Sex and the City

Carrie is a terrible friend, but I too have been dumped via Post It so I kind of hated her and liked her at the same time.

TELL IT PP!!!!!!!!! Steve was such a step down for Miranda. She settled in a ridiculous way, all because she got knocked up (which you’d think she wouldn’t do, if her prior actions on the show served as a prediction of future ones).

I also agree with another PP who said that Aidan was a pushover. Honestly couldn’t see his appeal.

And then Steve had the nerve to cheat on her!
And Aidan kissed Carrie when he was married to Cathy!

The show was bad-good but the movies drove me over the edge

Miranda was a b*tch so I wasn’t surprised Steve cheated. Also, why was he a step down? Just bc she was a lawyer?! He loved her even with her harsh personality. He was patient even when she pushed him away. She also wasn’t some great beauty. Plus, he ended up owning his own bar.

Some of the writing holds up, it was really sharp. But on the whole, it's mostly degenerate behavior being pushed that leaves most women mentally damaged.

Because the ugly hags and gay guys who wrote the show could never admit perfect women like Charlotte almost always have perfect lives.

Charlotte was perfect?! I disagree. She was very flawed, rigid, and neurotic.

Aww. I liked Steve! He was so sweet.

Unpopular opinion but I liked Trey and I think all of their issues were caused by Charlotte. She could have avoided that whole dumpster fire of a marriage if she hadn't gotten married to a guy she knew for a month.

I disliked all of them then, and still dislike them now.

+ add in incredibly judgmental, pretty narrow minded, super needy, low self esteem, and sometimes outright delusional. She was definitely not perfect in my book.

Anonymous wrote:Carrie was so sanctimonious. I agree with the PP about asking to borrow the money. Charlotte was like, “uuhhh you have a closet full of $600 shoes” really??? LOL. I hated that the writers guilted Charlotte into giving her the $$$.

I also read that it was in SJP’s contract that she didn’t do nude scenes. I always thought that was a little “I’m a star and I don’t have to stoop that low like the other three”; which seems a little unfair. I get it though. Once you “make it”, you work on your terms.

I’m going to go way out on a limb here and say that the show would’ve been better without her playing that role. It was ridiculous that she was supposed to be so good in bed and always had a bra on. And she totally ruined the show when she became an executive producer.

I'm the "tell it!!!" PP who disliked Steve and I agree with you on Trey. You're right -- if Charlotte and Trey got to know one another, they could have worked through his issues without the added weight of marriage (and thus, the expectation that they needed to have children yesterday).

20:33, agree re: Miranda. I think he was a step down for her because with her personality and job, she saw him as someone she could push around and take advantage of because of his flexible schedule and lack of income (relative to her). And he just kinda ... put up with it? Accepted it so he could be a "kept" man? I watched the show ~3-4 years ago, so my memory is fuzzy, but I do remember thinking that he's mostly along for the ride because Miranda makes more than him and that if she were a fellow bartender, he'd have bounced loooooong ago.

Plus, only in the world of SATC would Steve have owned a bar. IRL, Miranda would be crying on DCUM about how she does cooking, cleaning, pick up/drop off/carpool, and supplements her child's education while Steve got her knocked up, lives at her Brooklyn brownstone, and changed a diaper like once in 2002.

I disagree. Steve never wanted her money. In fact they broke up at one point bc he felt he wasn’t good enough and she was making him feel inferior. He was the nicest, calmest and most patient person she had met. He was willing to put up with her beyond harsh and bitter attitude bc he saw the person she was underneath. She took him for granted. Miranda wasn’t cooking or cleaning. She outsourced that to Magda, along with childcare.

Steve didn’t own the bar by himself, Aiden (who was successful), co owned with him so it was possible. Steve spent more time with that child bc Miranda was working (per the second movie) and they have episodes showing them co parent. He was by no means an absent father.

I liked Steve, too

I think it was clear that Charlotte jumped into marrying Trey because she thought that he checked all her boxes - only, she didn't know him well enough (or know herself well enough) to know what would be missing. The whole thing was seeing her move from having this list of what she thought she wanted, that conformed to her idea of what a perfect life would look like, to falling in love with the slobbish Jewish guy who adored her and who she came to love.

Oh yes, that I agree with. Harry was adorable and I was glad she came to realize how special he was, even if he wasn't as handsome and refined as Trey. But the whole thing where Trey was some monster - I believe she said in that therapy session that he stole her ability to feel love - lady, you're the one who wanted him to propose after like three weeks.

Also I'm not a super sexual person by any means but even I think you need to have sex with someone at least once before you promise God and the state of NY to only have sex with him for the rest of eternity. So, I did agree with Bunny when she came for Charlotte during the divorce settlement hearings. Yes, Charlotte did rush into marriage and no, she didn't take it seriously. She rushed into it after he bought her a Cartier watch, she cheated on him, she asked him to separate, and then only wanted to get back together after they had sex. I loved Charlotte as a character but the way she handled the entire marriage was pathetic. Should have just never gotten into that, girl!

Anywho, back to Steve. He was adorable! Kind of dorky looking and certainly not as ambitious as Miranda but he was a really upstanding guy. I always cry when I'm watching reruns and they air the episode (it's like one of the last few episodes) where his mom develops dementia and he takes care of her (and Miranda does, too, of course). I don't think he was a bum who mooched off her, I think they were just very different. She came from uptight Main Line parents and he was the son of a couple alcoholics from Queens. Just different backgrounds.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk?
