Will you and DH get an inheritance?

PP of the DH's unequal distribution. Part, although not all, was that while all the siblings were still alive, some of the money went to some grand kids.....for no clear reason other than favoritism. Sure it was my in-laws money to do with what they wanted, but to pay for one grandkids college or house down payment and not others was a quick ticket to resentment and more.

It depends on how long Mom lives. Right now we are
paying around $95,000 per year on caregivers in
Mom's home.

My parents divorced and remarried other people while in their 40's. They brought most of the assets to their new marriages, but now my sister and I will have to share any inheritance with our step-siblings (who we only knew as adults).

You really never know. My mother had a networth of several million when I was in my 20’s and would discuss her will/our future inheritance on a weekly basis. She would tell me often I was cut out of the will because of whatever ridiculous reason, she basically held that money over our head like a carrot since we were children...She was so mentally unstable I never expected a dime, even as a 21 year old being told we were rich and would get quite a bit one day. I think my siblings fell back on the idea of this magical inheritance and didn’t work as hard in school and career knowing one day they would receive money. Well she became riskier with her money, lost it all in a real estate crash and now lives in a low income apartment and has $25 in her bank account on a good day.

You're disgusting.

Then you should meet MIL.

Listen, even if your MIL is a rotten person, you should just get out of her life before you wish her ill for your gain. Have you said this so bluntly in front of your spouse?

No and No.

Both DH and I are just happy to have been given debt-free educations from our parents.

I've worked hard and saved well, so we comfortably support our kids. I plan to fund all their educations and hopefully host a nice family vacation every year, but don't plan on leaving them an inheritance either.

I've tried. Unfortunately she's a narcissist and refuses to stop inserting herself into my life. No, but DH has.

Yes and yes.

My dad died and left me about 11k in his bank account
My mom lives with me- so probably not
My FIL will use his on health

So no, and no.

Me and my husband are slowing building our wealth and will have some to pass to our kids. They also have a college fund which neither me or my husband had

I manage a wealthy families estate- they are paying $3800/week for fulltime care. $200k/year

Mother inherited money. Father's parents still alive.

Will spouse and I inherit money? Probably yes (spouse is an only child so whatever there is will go to him). It could be sizable, though health care expenses could easily wipe a lot of it out, as could my parents' penchant for spending and investment schemes (some of which have worked out great but I expect fewer will as my parents get less savvy with age). Our ancestors are fairly healthy and long-living, so I don't expect to see any money until my 60s or 70s. Not basing anything on an inheritance--if one comes it will be a bonus to what we've saved.

No kids, so my siblings and their kids will get something from us and a lot (definitely 6 figures, maybe 7) will go to charity.

NP, with similar situation (and annual cost). The high cost of senior living care is a simple fact, so I don't see why is it bad to point out the significant impact is has on inheritance - no one (except that one MIL PP) is saying they prefer the $ over the parent.

Also to those talking about this as being terrible to discuss - MANY aging parents openly talk about their will and retirement savings/trusts with their children so they don't have to guess what their wishes were when they pass away. My parents and my spouses parents have discussed their Will with us almost every other year - and based on anticipated spending in retirement have estimated what should be left and how they'd like to see those funds dispersed. It might seem morbid at first, but it's no uncommon when your parents exceed 75yrs old.

My mom did not receive any inheritance.
My dad and FIL both financially supported their parents in old age.
My MIL received a small inheritance. I would guess around $100k.
I will inherit about $2-300k. My disabled brother will inherit $2 million. I will inherit any remainder from my brother if he dies before I do.
DH will inherit around $5 million. Hopefully most of that will be passed on to our kids, though realistically I know DH and I will spend about $1 million of it. We have not prioritized retirement saving as much as other things because of this expected inheritance. (Yes, yes, I know, you cannot count on inheritances. We are saving, just not as much as we should.)

Nothing from either side. Our families are broke.

Our kids will get a lot when we go though.
