Will you and DH get an inheritance?

Grandma is 96 and has a big estate. Kids get 500k + 1/5 what’s leftover. Grandkids (9 of us) get 100k each.

My other grandma is also in her 90s and I don’t know much more, so my parents haven’t inherited anything yet.

In-laws got nothing from their parents.

Both sets say they’re spending it all and we don’t expect anything.

My mom did not have an inheritance when her parents died (dirt poor). My dad will get $100k from his father when he passes.

I don’t expect an inheritance from my parents nor my MIL. They are all in good health thankfully so I hope they live much longer and spend it all down.

When my Dad received an inheritance he elected to not take it and had it passed to me and my siblings. Recently he updated us on my parents estate plans and we will get a very nice inheritance. But I’m hopeful that’s it’s so far in the future that it will really be to the benefit of my children and grandchildren. My parents made it on their own and that’s what we want to do.

No and no.
But I would love to leave my children debt free for university and something more for when we are gone (maybe future grandchildren’s 529s)

I received $23k when my grandma died, which was a total shocker. She was very poor and would reuse tinfoil, limit baths to about 2 inches of water, etc. Here estate was mostly split between 5 grandkids, so this was a total surprise. I will get some when my mom passes, again, hopefully not for a couple decades.

For those that say that a certain amount is t life changing, I paid off my student loans and paid for an extended maternity leave with my inheritance. I think of that as life changing.

Inheritance in your 20s is life changing but it’s not in your 60s or 70s.

We received about 80K from my husband's grandparents and about 50K from my mom. We may get a little something when my MIL passes, but I am not sure. If nothing really drastic happens, we should be able to bequest at least 200K to each child, maybe more, if they choose to sell our home in time.

We got a little over $100K from my maternal grandparents 15 years ago. My parents passed it directly on to me and my siblings because they didn’t need it.

Will get in the neighborhood of $2M from my parents and probably $150K from my in-laws.

Yes, we will get about 1 million from my parents and about 1.5 from DH family.

My dh and I? If you consider less than 400k each, yes.
Our parents are from the greatest generation, were helped by all the middle class / working class social mobility GI bill programs, and scrimped and saved as much as they could.

What would you call it, if not an inheritance?

Well, on Dcum I'm the pp and considered a "poor" so I'm not sure what most people here call it. I call it an inheritance.

A friend of mine told me once that her parents could die multiple times they still wouldn't have anything to pass to her lol. I am in the same situation DH might get something but I don't really know and don't care much. I have a rental property I am hoping to pass to my children.

We got less than $100k when DHs parents died. We will get about $1.5m when my mother dies, probably nothing when my father dies because he remarried. We expect to leave our kids a nice amount - we have about $6m now but will of course use a chunk in retirement.

Ummm, I've seen plenty of instances where a 60 something absolutely had a significant upgrade in there quality of life after receiving an inheritance. It's strange that you think only young, able 20 somethings could appreciate an inheritance.

When you say that your parents passed it directly to you does that mean that they refused their inheritance money and it automatically went to you? Or did they inherit the money and then gifted it to you? Just wondering how you can go about doing that.
