This. At age 5 we discovered that my daughter had no DTAP immunity. This was done through blood titre trying to solve another issue. The dr said up to 20% of vaccinated kids don’t reach full immunity. We had to do extra DTAPs on top of the required schedule. She is just now at baseline but not “robust”- this is why EVERYONE who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated. Herd immunity is hard to achieve. If I met a mom who didn’t vaccinate I wouldn’t be friends with her. I don’t have time for stupid. |
It would depend on whether my kids had their full round of vaccinations or not. My kids are older and up to date so I am less concerned (especially since I can't possibly know who all is vaccinated or not).
My younger child was a newborn in 2014 when there was another big measles outbreak and I remember being furious at antivaxxers and afraid to take my baby out of the house. |

We just wouldn’t associate with folks so idiotic - it’s a sign we’d have nothing in common actually. It would end the relationship. Family too. |
No, this is why everyone who is vaccinated should have the blood test to make sure they are immune. |
What a weird counterpoint. These are not mutually exclusive. |
Unless they have a medical reason not to (like my mother), I would not associate with them - this lack of critical thinking skills will show up in other areas of their lives! |
Yeah, especially considering that the reason why some aren’t immune is that some people have terrible seroconversion rates. These people can get vaccinated repeatedly. The best way to approach this challenge is to ensure high vaccination rates to compensate for that percentage of the community, as well as those with medical exemptions. |
FYI there is no such thing as "DTAP immunity". DTAP is a vaccine that's supposed to protect against 3 different things. I actually don't know why they group them that way, it doesn't really make sense to me. But anyway, the "aP" part is pertussis (whooping cough), and the vaccine for that usually doesn't last longer than 12 months. I was getting my titers drawn a while ago to check my current status and my doc said not to even bother testing for pertussis even though I had one within the past few years, because unless it was literally within the last couple of months then it's almost certain that the titer wouldn't be high enough. That's why they tell women to get it every pregnancy, even if you have kids back-to-back, because the protection doesn't last long. |
What are the medical concerns? DP. I want to understand because I don’t. Surely you can expand on this, with honesty, and still preserve anonymity? |
It's several things. She caught a pretty rare and deadly - non vaccine preventable - virus when she was 5 months old that landed her in the hospital for a week (now she has recurrent outbreaks of that virus and need daily antivirals to try to prevent them). She's has severe allergies (I mean really SEVERE, she's allergic to lots of things and has had anaphylactic reactions several times). She also severe eczema and asthma, hence lots of steroids in all forms that are messing with her growth and immunity. I am aware that most people would probably still follow the schedule. But I don't feel confortable with it for her. We are pretty much picking the shots she should have in order of priority and leaving the less crucial ones for later. I personally have some autoimmune diseases as they run in my family, so I take all of this seriously. I am not asking for validation or sympathy. But you asked so I wanted to answer truthfully. |
I don't think Dtap should be made mandatory for school for this reason. #1) my Ped said that there is literally no diptheria in this country right now and the odds of getting that are basically 0. #2) my ped said that a child getting tetanus is extremely rare and almost 0 chance, #3) my ped said exactly what you are saying about the pertussis immunity part. We got my daughter's titers checked at age 6 and included the pertussis and tetanus in the titers. She had almost 0 immunity to pertussis but lots of immunity to tetanus. She received the entire Dtap series. Her ped did not recommend another Dtap since she had completed the series. |
This is a hot topic but a moot point. I guarantee all of you that your children are around unvaccinated kids most days or minimum weekly. And none of you have a say in the matter because most times, you have no idea who it is. |
My kid did not immunity for tentanus or pertussis in DTAP. But at that age you have to give the Complete DTAP. The pneumovax didn’t take either. We titre every year and plan to through childhood. |
Oh, look, it’s an all-natural mama bear moron. |
