BOE to make decision will be made by May 2019 and disclose to the community by this fall!

I think we need a another STEM magnet like Blair on the western side, not four more IB magnets.

The problem is there aren't enough smart kids on that side of the county to merit this.

Long overdue. What is Central and what is Down County?

No, it's true. Those schools have been going downhill for decades. For example, Whitman is a GS4 these days and Cold Spring barely gets anyone into the magnets.

Nope. Only 2 new High Schools are in the pipeline. Crown and Woodward. No talks of either one being an IB magnet school.

This is not true. I know for a fact that there is a MCPS proposal to be discussed this week for 4 (or 3) new schools to be named IB magnet schools. They are not new schools - they are existing schools to host the program similar to Richard Montgomery High School.

An IB school isn't a "magnet" unless admissions are selective, as at RM. Otherwise it's just one more low-performing school in MCPS saddled with an IB program.

No, it's a magnet if it draws students from outside the school boundaries. That's it. No need for selective admissions.

The new magnet IB will be at the updated Northwood or Kennedy.

This would be great!

These are both documented facts which speak for themselves.

MCPS has data on the number of highly able students in each middle school cluster. According to the data these schools are Cabin John, Frost, Hoover, Pyle in the Western part of the county and Silver Spring International and Sligo on the Eastern part of the county. For some reason they don’t have data for Takoma Park which should also have high numbers among the inbound students

SSMS dominates! Really wish they had included TPMS since just the in-boundary kids would be similar to SSMS but with the magnet, it would make the rest of the county MSs look bad.

I agree. And, forget throwing good money after bad on more IB programs. They are too expensive. We need very small class sizes and strong academic supports in ESs with FARMS rates that are higher than 30%. Let FARMS students COSA into any low FARMS rate school they want. Few will take advantage of this, but some families will. For MS and HS students who are significantly below grade level focus on graduating from HS (either diploma or GED) and career readiness.

This is BS. Any student (FARMS or non-FARMS) from a low-FARMS rate school should be allowed to COSA into any low FARMS rate school they want, as long as the FARMS rate of the new school is lower than their home school. No transportation should be provided to such students.

This will automatically make the class sizes smaller for the school with the higher FARMS rates.

Non-FARMs students need to stay in school with higher FARMs and not leave.

FARMs students leaving a high FARMs school and attending a low FARMs school will help with SES diversity.

I know DCC MCCPTA group may not want this outcome, but this is the most logical outcome if MCPS wants to increase SES diversity voluntarily. MCPS should allow FARMs kids to take COSA in any school as long as capacity exists.

Unless MCPS is supplying all the transportation this is not really an option for many lower income families. Parents are working. There is no extra car. No extra $$ for uber or metro.

I wrote the original post being quoted, and I do think transportation should be provided. I'd much rather the money be spent on busing than on IB programs that aren't benefitting the low income populations at these schools.

The results are for 5th grade students from the elementary schools feeding into the listed middle schools

So it certainly looks like there are enough qualified students in the Western part of the county to benefit from a Science Magnet

They seem small compared to the numbers in the SS area which is probably why they located the magnets over there.
