BOE to make decision will be made by May 2019 and disclose to the community by this fall!

I think we need a another STEM magnet like Blair on the western side, not four more IB magnets.

The problem is there aren't enough smart kids on that side of the county to merit this.

Huh? Not enough smart kids in the western part of MoCo?

lol.. yea, I think that ^PP is confused.

No, it's true. Those schools have been going downhill for decades. For example, Whitman is a GS4 these days and Cold Spring barely gets anyone into the magnets.

MCPS has data on the number of highly able students in each middle school cluster. According to the data these schools are Cabin John, Frost, Hoover, Pyle in the Western part of the county and Silver Spring International and Sligo on the Eastern part of the county. For some reason they don’t have data for Takoma Park which should also have high numbers among the inbound students

So it certainly looks like there are enough qualified students in the Western part of the county to benefit from a Science Magnet

They seem small compared to the numbers in the SS area which is probably why they located the magnets over there.

And there is one in Poolesville

OK, the PP has to be a troll since "magnets" are used draw higher income students to poorer schools, and that was why MCPS put all the magnets in the previously lower performing schools. Those magnets did their job in that it has pulled in higher income families into those neighborhoods.

Possibly except MCPS own data for middle schools shows far more highly able students in the SS area than other areas which also aligns with the Blair magnet student population.

I agree. And, forget throwing good money after bad on more IB programs. They are too expensive. We need very small class sizes and strong academic supports in ESs with FARMS rates that are higher than 30%. Let FARMS students COSA into any low FARMS rate school they want. Few will take advantage of this, but some families will. For MS and HS students who are significantly below grade level focus on graduating from HS (either diploma or GED) and career readiness.

This is BS. Any student (FARMS or non-FARMS) from a low-FARMS rate school should be allowed to COSA into any low FARMS rate school they want, as long as the FARMS rate of the new school is lower than their home school. No transportation should be provided to such students.

This will automatically make the class sizes smaller for the school with the higher FARMS rates.

Class size is not directly dependent on number of students in a school.

This plan would result in teacher positions being cut so it would have at best a null effect on class sizes.
