I grew up here, went to private high school in the late 80s/early 90s, and snuck out all the time (actually starting in 8th grade). I would actually be much more comfortable these days with my kids using Uber to sneak out (not that I'd approve) - at least it's trackable.
We used to call a cab company, give them a neighbor's address, then meet the cab in the street to go anywhere from 1 to ~10 miles away. Then repeat when it was time to come home.
Somehow, despite the drinking, drugs, and hooking up, I'm a very productive member of society these days and raising my kids to be responsible and make good choices without stifling them. They're teens now, and we've had talks about sneaking out and the risks involved.
