PSA - Sex abuse at Washington Hebrew

16:46- why are you being so cagey. You obviously don’t care for DJ but you have no right to make people think that horrible things are going on at the school without giving us detailed evidence. Either come out and say what you are SURE is going on in a straight forward way or go away!

Sorry to hear this happened. If anyone is looking for a good resource for talking to their kids about what happened and/or teach kids about acceptable and unacceptable touching get a copy of A Very Touching Book...for Little People and for Big People. My mom spent the last 30 years counseling abused children. This book is the resource she recommends most often to parents and uses in her practice to teach kids about what's okay and what's not.

anyone at the meeting who can post more info? don't need any names out there, but please post the years the suspect taught at the school, so people know if they need to contact the school for more info.

We sent our child to 1 session of summer camp and did confirm with the Congregation's General Counsel that the alleged perpetrator was employed through the summer sessions. We are not enrolled in preschool this fall....the logistics of the program do not meet our needs but I am worried that we are going to be left out of important communications because we are no longer enrolled at the school. (I believe we were notified of the incident later than the parents of current enrollees.) We would like to attend the meeting on Thursday but have heard nothing from WHC on that matter.

Problem with DJ is her complete and total hubris. A headmistress on an ego trip doesn't = responsible for children being molested. But... DJ has created a culture of secrecy, and of one-woman rule, that doesn't belong in a preschool. She is not responsible for what this suspect may have done (and isn't a terrible person). But the issue brings to a head the need for her to find the door...or for parents to send their kids elsewhere.

This exactly is the problem. We don’t have a child at WHC anymore because we left over the fact that we didn’t trust DJ to do her best to keep our children safe. In the 1 year we were there when she was director (we’d been there with previous directors and had no issues) I can’t even count how many times something inappropriate happened with various teachers and not only did she defend the teachers she made the parents involved feel crazy for bringing these issues to her. If it happens one time in a year you can brush it off as maybe the parent was difficult but it happened so many times in that year over things that were definitely inappropriate. Unfortunately things can happen anywhere with the best directors but given what I know of DJs history this should be the last strike for her. Not because this happened on her watch but because of her cavalier attitude.

My family was essentially bullied by Dj. I’m really really upset tonight because her bullying may have, in effect, protected the person she should have been focused on (long story that isn’t appropriate to share here). Anyway, I don’t know what to do. My child has moved on and is thriving so I don’t want to go back (by having child questioned by scary detectives) and I don’t have any smoking gun evidence because I’m not sure if any abuse happened to my child and have no real way of finding out. I wish i knew some of you in real life because I did not know that other families had such similar horrific experiences. The secrecy and unwillingness to inform parents about their kids during the day is the really f’ed up part of that school. This whole situation should be in the paper. People have a right to know what they are potentially getting into.

Thank you for the very helpful suggestion. My child had an odd thing happen at school (I’m the upset tonight pp). I asked her every which way if some one touched my child, if they saw something yucky, etc. It is actually really difficult to communicate to a small child about this because it can seem funny or just like “gee mommy what are you blabbering on about “. In light of all this, I wish I had taken the strange incident more seriously, and I wish I had a resource like this book.

What are you guys talking about with regard to other incidents at WHC? Our kid is supposed to start there this week. What kind of incidents have come up prior to this?

That was a painful meeting last night. I just want to send hugs to all of us going through this. This is incredibly hard to go through as a parent and so unfair.

What exactly are you going through? I still haven't read any account if anything.

I am deeply sorry for the children and families affected. I cannot imagine what you are going through. I hope you are given the information and support you need. In case other families need to be aware, perhaps this a situation to be shared with the public thru the media?

A child told a parent about "inappropriate contact/conduct" by a teacher at the school. It was vague what that inappropriate contact/conduct was until last night when fliers were distributed about spotting sexual abuse and professionals were brought in to discuss how to talk to your children about this and identify if they might have been abused. The police, to the surprise of the school officials, suggested that their investigation of the allegation indicated that multiple children were involved. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave and was employed starting in the Spring of 2016 until August 15, 2018. They are going to hold additional training for parents and will be sending out an email with resources.
