Are parents pulling their kids from school?
Anonymous
Good point. It's hard to know what's going on at WH.

With the school year days away the school needs to share more information so parents can make informed decisions.

How long has the school known about this, and how long did the wait to inform parents

What’s the best way for current and former families of this school to find out if our children were ever in the presence of the accused employee? So little information is beyond concerning to parents who may need to (1) reconsider placement for preschool and more importantly (2) start some unimaginable conversations and therapy for young children.

I am expecting (going to demand) a lot of answers at the already scheduled parent meeting on Wednesday. At this point I just dont understand how we can feel comfortable sending our daughter here. She was there for summer camp when this happened. Unless they give us more information, it is really difficult thinking of sending her next week when school starts. I understand the school should theoretically be even more safe now after something like this happens and they will institute policies to make sure it doesn't happen again, but seriously how do you re-gain their trust?

DJ does not believe in reporting to parents what happens during the school day. This is a larger problem/culture of secrecy -- the school believes it's OK to keep parents in the dark re what is happening to their children during the day.

Can you elaborate on this?? My kids went to camp there this summer and are supposed to go to school there this year, but I don't know the director very well and your statement is freaking me out. What do you mean she won't tell parents what happens during the day??

I totally agree. It sounds like this poster has a bone to pick with DJ. We just went for summer camp and are supposed to start next week, but my previous interactions with DJ had been great. I'm certainly not in a position to defend the school right now, but I dont understand this statement and would love to hear more. I am feeling very nervous and upset about the situation.

Dear Parents and Members of the Washington Hebrew Congregation,

We are deeply appreciative of your concern and interest in the developments at Washington Hebrew. When we first became aware of an allegation of potential inappropriate behavior by a single individual, we immediately reported the allegations to the police who began an investigation. We have been working closely with the police, who have asked us not to share certain information publicly out of concern that disclosing more specific information than we have already shared could compromise their investigation.

Our first concern is with the safety of our children. Law enforcement is actively and aggressively investigating the allegations. We will pass on any information that we learn as guided by the police. If you have any questions for the school, please contact us directly using the information provided to you in the communication sent yesterday.

I would like to comment on this. It doesn’t sound like someone with a bone to pick with DJ to me. It sounds like someone who went to WHC. the temple seems to support her despite many parents voicing concerns over her administration. She has had other issues with teachers that have been swept under the rug. To be sure, there are MANY wonderful teachers at the school, and should you be placed in one of those classes and have a child who doesn’t need any special support, you may have a very positive experience. But new teachers aren’t often given proper training - or as is evident here, proper oversight. I don’t know if this was a camp or school year incident(s?). I would be concerned going back to the school at this point, particularly as DJ is supposed to be spending much more time at the Potomac location than the Macomb location this year. Seems like Macomb (and likely the Potomac location too) needs a full time dedicated, involved, informed director.

FYI- this happened during summer camp. Not sure if it was during the regular or extended hours.

Does anyone know whether they do criminal background
checks and what oversight or supervision is there?
Are they accredited and are toddlers left with only one adult?

Can you be more specific? We had an incident last school year and she told us immediately about the details and her actions. What kinds of things are you asking about and not getting answers about?

I just don't understand why that email was sent with no resources for parents. I understand that MPD may have asked that details of the investigation are kept confidential, but in the meantime, a bunch of parents are just being left feeling helpless. It's been 24 hours since the last email and no follow up with articles, names of counselors, places to go...that's irresponsible.

I think one of the hard parts too is that we just dont know the nature of the incident. It really puts you in a hard place emotionally and you just dont know what to think or do.
