Closing Georgetown Pike Ramp to I-495

Anonymous
Hey MD resident here. I never drive in the area y'all are talking about, but I live very close to another Beltway off-ramp and I'd be thrilled if there were no commuter cut-through jerks on my street (which has a school) every afternoon. So I love this idea - maybe if VA does it, MD will do it too, and then no one can drive anywhere at all. Sounds super, doesn't it?

[b]Way to deflect. If Marylanders didn't think they were so above the law, it obviously would not have come to this. Nice job, idiot. You should probably stop talking now.

+1. So sick of Marylands speeding through neighborhoods, turning left in front of oncoming cars that have the right of way and blocking the box.

First, there is a cop that has been stationed on GTP because Marylanders do anything at all to get onto that part of the beltway, no matter how.

This includes blocking the box (most of the time), or the occasional Marylander who thinks thy are witty and will drive right TO the cop and pass the island (ie: instead of joining his fellow Marylanders on the offramp - this occasional snowflake bypasses his fellow offenders all together and makes a right AFTER the actual off ramp island - right AT the offramp.)

Witty? Not so much. Especially when the Governor of Virginia lives near the neighborhood and gets completely fed up with effects of Waze and its direct ramifications. So, you have a ramp closure. Congratulations Marylanders, you got what you asked for.

PP here. Not to mention, the Marylanders who tried to U turn at that very dangerous intersection for years, but were finally stopped in their tracks.

The intersection is a nightmare but as a resident of McLean and someone who is frustrated on a weekly basis trying to leave my neighborhood- I feel closing the ramp is EXTREMELY short sighted-yes that is right I am AGAINST it! Posting the police at the intersection has been very effective. My vote is for a red light camera!

Hi neighbor! I live off Balls Hill, and it has taken me over 30 minutes to get out before--thanks to the backed up MD cars. I've also been hit at the intersection of Balls Hill/G-Town Pike TWICE by someone who seems to think a left turn on green towards the beltway is a right-of-way over a straight through the green light. Waze is half the problem.

Have you been writing to Foust and others?

John.Foust@fairfaxcounty.gov

Susan.Falconer@mail.house.gov

Jane.Edmondson@fairfaxcounty.gov

district31@senate.virginia.gov

FWIW, I think this is a completely lame brained idea. Plenty of people who live in the area need to access 495 during those hours. They should consider red light cameras, widening the road leading to the intersection, concrete blocking for traffic flow on the right turn lane to Balls Hill, etc.

I think it is desperatlely needed, and yes I have written. The obscene tolls on I-66 puts the Marylanders in the residential neighborhoods where they don't belong It isn't about NIMBY, it's about safety. Fire Personnel can't even get up Balls Hill anymore.

This discussion is about driving, but it should be about why does Maryland economy not offer jobs which will provide Marylanders reason not to have insane commutes.

There are lots of Marylanders who commute to Virginia for work, not too many Virginians going to MD for work.

Sounds good to me since I never go over into Maryland and this mess affects me every single afternoon in McLean. If I drive over to MD and they are restrictions, I will abide by them. This is not a personal issue, this is a massive traffic foul-up caused by the I-66 tolls and it has to be addressed. That's not the same as shutting down a few streets in MD, but if MD wants to do that, fine by me.

Why on earth are Marylanders surprised? Everything feasible has been attempted, and Marylanders insist that the laws do not apply to them. It is most definitely a safety issue. If Marylanders had backed down, decided to not endanger neighborhood children, or decided not to block a box, the situation would not have had to come to this. But, Marylanders refuse to take responsibility, and they consistently refuse to abide by clearly stated laws, so viola. Shocker!

This intersection was a mess before the 66 Tolls started.

I live near /Benjamin and we have a very senior Federal official who lives nearby who is the cause of this closure. This closure is happening and will be permanent. There is no control Fairfax or VA has on this.....

Precisely and they should not be clogging McLean and Great Falls private streets to get home.

Utter BS - this was caused by the $44.00 tolls on I-66. And if you are referencing Comstock, which I assume you are, she has NOTHING to do with VDOT and NOVA roads. Nothing. Zero. Look up the difference between Congressional representation and state legislature. GO complain to your supervisor Foust.

Why do Marylanders think their commute is everyone else's problem?

They decided to take a job in another state. To most people, that would mean moving to that state, not driving to endanger almost every day. They simply have no regard for the rules of the road, so they got what they asked for. People who live in that area should not be fearing for their lives every day because of some a-hole drivers who think they are above the law. There are more and more each day, and it is truly out of control - much like the drivers themselves.

Private streets? Are they in your driveway now?

Not this PP, but this is the kind of flippant response that led to the closure. In case you are wondering.
