What do France-French think of "French" people in Quebec?

When I was growing up, no one talked about any of the French cultures not in the Hexagon, as mainland France is called. The most we knew about were the DOM-TOMs, or the overseas departments and territories, which are officially French, like the Antilles, La Reunion island, Guyane (where the Ariane rocket launches from), etc... Not places like Quebec that actually belong to a different country.

But as an adult I've noticed growing awareness of La Francophonie, or the global French language and culture used on different continents, regardless of whether these French speakers are citizens of other nations or not. And now French people from mainland France are a lot more aware of, and appreciate of, all the French-speaking descendants of French settlers in all parts of the world.

It took a concerted government communication effort over many decades and it's been successful. One of the few things France has done well recently

Love hearing this. I am learning French for a variety of reasons, including how the culture spread throughout the world.

It is neither good not bad. It is French Canadian.

+1

It's only good or bad if you decide that's the case.

Movies romanticize the European French accent just like they romanticize a high class English accent. You're comparing.

Imagine watching a few minutes of Downton Abbey and then watching a few minutes of Good Will Hunting or The Sopranos. You'd have the same feeling.

Also, part of the Quebec culture is that it is normalized for a woman to ask a man out.

One thing I like better about Quebecois is that there are fewer homophones than in standard French. For example, mettre and maitre are pronounced differently in Quebecois but pronounced the same in French.

French people are not disgusted by it. It’s more of a paternalistic attitude that it’s cute or quaint. It’s not like the Parisian reaction to an American accent.

My mother’s ancestors came by boat from Eastern France to Canada over 300 years ago. They kept incredible records in French on arrivals, births, marriages, deaths, even who was on boats coming and going.

The first refugees were Acadians from France who left France over religion intolerance . Nova Scotia was the first province of Canada.

The British came and did what they do. They kicked out thousands of French Acadians because they outnumbered the British and Britain wanted their land. British burned down their houses and land and shipped them to various places. Some Acadians managed to come back to Nova Scotia, some were sent back to France, a lot ended up in Louisiana, a French colony, many went to Quebec.

French were strong people, many of the women lived to be 100 and had 10 children with very low mortality rate in children. This intimidated the British.

My grandmother was the last in our family to speak fluent French. My mother understood French but didn’t speak it very well. The British passed a law that would only fund public schools if they taught in English only. English won like it did in so many colonized countries.

This is a common story in Cajun country. You might enjoy the videos of Jourdan Thibodeaux, who talks and sings in Cajun French.

The whole country is Beautiful. What’s the surprise?
