What do France-French think of "French" people in Quebec?

Anonymous
I read they settled with place with outcasts and chubby prostitutes because conditions & weather were so harsh and nobody wanted to move there. Very little if any nobility? I was pleasantly surprised by how pretty Quebec City is, but the French vibe felt a bit off.

Quebec was France's first colony at a time before it became an ambitious colonizer. It really didn't administer Quebec very closely and eventually France ceded the territory to Britain.

From my point of view, French don't really think about Quebec but the Quebecois do see themselves as cousins to the French.

You can google a lot of interesting articles about the French (meaning people from France) invasion of Quebec. Here is one. Personally I find French Canadians a delightful combination of Anglo and French sensibilities!

Is this where the King Louis XIV's prostitutes as settlers urban legend comes from?

The King's Daughters or Filles du Roi were not prostitutes. Many were orphans. It was requested that heartier women be sent in the later boats. They held up better to the harsher conditions. It was an opportunity for the 800 or women to have a dowry and a say in choosing a husband. If they were found to be women of ill repute, they were shipped back.

Have any of you people with negative images of French Canadians been to Montreal or other parts of Quebec? Montreal is a spectacular city and Quebec is a beautiful province. No, French Canadians are not French (as in from France), but they have their own beautiful culture. Go visit Montreal - you’ll be blown away!

According to wiki, many millions in Quebec have French ancestry. "French-Canadian" is descent based, not language based.

Agreed. I took a bike tour from Burlington VT to Montreal last summer and loved it. It's beautiful and the culture is delightful. Montreal is one of my favorite cities ever!!

French people love Quebec. Montreal is full of them. The majority of immigrants in Quebec are from France

I'm French-Canadian. Discovering your Fille de Roi ancestors in your family tree, would be a similar feeling to when an American discovers a relative in their family tree who came over on the Mayflower.

I spent time in Paris with a French Canadian friend, and people definitely looked down on her accent. Seemed similar to the way some Americans might view a Southern twang.

I presume similar to how awful the distorted Mexi-Spanish comes across in Spain. Literally don't even know what they're saying half the time.

What the f@ck are you talking about?

Mexican spanish is not distorted.

Your racism is showing.

- native Spanish speaker, not Mexican nor Spanish.
