Georgetown Day vs. Maret?

Anonymous
Could someone please tell me about the college counseling at GDS? We are not well connected and won't have pull at any schools (as I imagine many GDS parents do) so we would really be relying on the college counseling office for help with placement for our kid.

GDS is currently looking for a director of college counseling. The current associate directors will be interim co-directors next year.

It seems that nearly every school is trying to tune up their college offices. Maret had a lot of turnover this year, and Sidwell is looking for an assistant director.

Okay- so what accounts for their great college placement? Is it because the parents are connected and can pay full freight?

I don't think it's any better or worse than at any other competitive high school in the area. The list below was posted on another thread. Bear in mind that it covers 3 years worth of graduates, with about 125 kids per year.

This is a pretty amazing list. Except for Michigan, NYU and Tufts, which are good, solid choices for kids in the upper middle, the largest GDS enrollments are at Harvard and Yale, as well as Penn. That says something.

Is there a list like this for either Maret or Sidwell? I've looked online but don't see them published.

There are also more matriculations at Tulane (11), U of Wisc-Madison (14), and Washington University in St Louis (18) than at Harvard or Yale.

The number of kids going to Harvard, Yale and Penn (and Georgetown) is very impressive for sure. But I'm wondering if the kids families have big time connections or if most got in on merit - also, are families paying for super expensive college placement services separate from school? It's also interesting to me that most to of their students go to Washington University - great school but seems like an unusual choice given the distance- and Tulane - what's the appeal?

Only 4 to UVA? Guess there aren't many VA residents at GDS.

Having seen these list from years from the publics and privates it's practically the same bell curve distribution.

You go private for other intrinsic reasons, not college outcome.

not trying to make y'all feel bad but if you look at Wilson & Whitman/BCC it puts this list to shame. Just saying. I hope that the $$ you put in has other value then where you kid goes to school.

How so? If you post the Wilson and Whitman/BCC lists we can compare apples-to-apples.

But you can’t. Unless the school you child is accepted to is the only thing important about heir educational experience.

For us, we prefer private school for, other reasons, such as learning experience, caring faculty, Estelle t reopsources, safe community, etc. Wilson and Whitman were never options for us.

Not if you acknowledge the fact that this list includes all the graduates of GDS vs all the graduates of W/W/BCC. The lists are comparable if you compare the destinations of the top 20% of the public high school seniors to the top 80% of GDS seniors.
