Concerned about buying in WJ cluster because of re-zoning

I actually agree with PP that if you're smart you'd buy in DCC neighborhoods that are going to go to Woodward, where you can still by SFHs for around $400k. They're next to flip after Kensington and Garret Park Estates.

Possibly but I'd wait until the official announcement you don't want to guess wrong and be stuck at Einstein. Prices won't sky rocket overnight, it will take a year for prices to climb once the area gets out of the DCC.

Yeah, there's no way of knowing which DCC neighborhoods will go to Woodward. The ones PPs are suggesting are right next to Einstein, so while they make sense in some respects, not at all in others.

Moreover, we don't know what the impact of these changes will be on the DCC. I would hope MCPS isn't going to make changes that will make it less desirable, but who knows.

It will be funny to see the people who "love" Einstein jump for joy when they get zoned somewhere else while the people who "love" the diversity and mixed SES of WJ scream bloody murder when they get zoned out.

BOE may make some weird decisions so it's not guaranteed that nearby DCC zones will become Woodward. Only one thing is guaranteed, WJ will look a lot different.

It would make sense because Einstein will be roughly as overcrowded as WJ when Woodward opens according to the county's projections.

Go look what’s for sale in North Kensington now. Things are not cheap!

WJ cluster will become WJ and Woodward. Both will be lower performing schools than current WJ no matter how boundaries are drawn. If you are too concerned about it then avoid WJ. Simple solution.

Realistically, MCPS only has a limited number of high schools that are considered very strong: Whitman, Churchill, Wootton, Walter Johnson, and B-CC.

Compare that to NoVa, where you have Langley, McLean, George Mason, Madison, Woodson, Oakton, Marshall, Washington-Lee, Chantilly, Robinson, Lake Braddock, and West Springfield (and that doesn't include Loudoun).

I just don't see how MCPS will take any steps that will weaken WJ and push that number down from five to four. If it does, expect even more flight to NoVa.

And they can toss in Poolesville, but the point still holds.

Who considers Washington-lee strong other than the Arlington parents who couldn’t afford Yorktown?

Woodward used to be a high school up till about 1990. MCPS closed the high school and combined the Woodward population with WJ. They thought they could sell the Woodward property until the Woodward family came forward to remind them of the teams of the deed to the property. The Woodward family had deeded the land to MCPS as long as the land was used for educational purposes. So the plan for selling the land was scrapped.

If MCPS goes back to the original Woodward boundaries, students would not be pulled from Wheaton and Einstein. Even if there are boundaries adjusted to dip into these areas, you are not in the neighborhoods that truly are issues for these high schools. Woodward would still be a predominantly low minority, high income school. It would actually make WJ lower income because most of the high income families come from the Luxmanor and Farmland neighborhoods that are closer to Woodward than WJ.

As far as who pays what to live in what school district, any neighborhood can be redistricted at anytime. Boundaries do shift for various reasons. Many families paid a premium to go to Woodward when it was a high school. They were in an uproar when MCPS picked to combine the school with WJ. MCPS will do whatever MCPS wants. Any focus group of parents is just a shell game to make you think you have input.

Disagree. Lots and lots of $$$ homes going up in Wyngate boundary.

Also the original boundary doesn't address current overcrowding at nearby schools so is moot.

SES level in WJ and Woodward, both will fall due to adding 2000 students from DCC. Nothing against DCC because I live here, but it's a simple fact. Test scores will also fall, but life will go on. If you are afraid of these outcomes then pick a different HS cluster.

The phrase “W” schools will lose its meaning when WJ and Woodward fill up with lower performers from the DCC.

I'd say the more proactive parents are leaving the county entirely.

Unless the county figures out what TRUE equity is and refuses to water down "rigor," which is a joke of a term these days, not even the W schools will function well.

peace out, folks!
