Jackson was on par with Kilmer and Thoreau. Now you are comparing it to Glasgow which is a 3 rated school. What point are you trying to make? That there are other middle schools that will still be worse than Jackson? I agree, but it doesn't take away from the fact that before this change, all three middle schools were equally well regarded. Holmes does not have a LLIV program does it? It just has the middle years program. Glasgow pulls from 11 elementary schools that then branch off into two high schools. So each group of AAP kids have at least 5 other elementary feeders that will go onto the same high school. If Holmes were to start an AAP center, I bet Glasgow would decline even below the 3 great schools rating it is now.

So, to be clear, this is just about losing bragging rights.

No. It's about entire high school pyramids becoming undesirable thus dropping our tax base as a county.

Dear Lord, you are way overthinking this. I suggest a hobby...

DP. PP seems to know far more about trends in the county and its schools than you do. I suggest you do more research before breaking out the snide.

Sorry, if this person thinks the boundary change will cause both the demise of a school, causing entire high school pyramids to become undesirable and to ruin the tax base as a county I don’t think I’m relying on her to predict the trends in the county. Sounds more like she’s shaking a magic 8 ball til she gets the gloom and doom answers she desires. Also sounds like an inability to move on from a done deal that isn’t such a major issue overall (no one is sick, hurt, etc)

I don't think people should necessarily "move on," when this won't take effect until the fall of 2018 and the School Board elections are in 2019.

Keeping decisions like this front-and-center, which have led to major, unaddressed problems in several pyramids (Annandale, Lee, Mount Vernon) and stand to lead to similar problems in the Falls Church pyramid, may be the only way to force the School Board to look at pyramids they have systematically neglected or to replace current School board members with new members who focus less on national politics and pay more attention to local education.

Falls Church HS is the same as it always has been. The elementary schools are the same as they always have been. This minor change at the MS is not going to destroy the pyramid. The MS will be a little more in alignment with the HS and ESs.

Luther Jackson is not the center of the FCHS universe. You have the tail wagging the dog in your assessment.

Driving Poe MS up to 70% FARMS has been detrimental to both Annandale HS and the elementary schools that feed into Poe. You either don't know what you're talking about or don't care.

I have to wonder if some of the posters here are School Board members trying to minimize their responsibility for bad decisions or Vienna/Oakton residents wishing to absolve themselves of any role in the undermining of LJ and the pyramid.

We get it. You want your cake and to eat it too. You're happy to let someone else clean up later.

Removing many of the relative wealthy families from Jackson certainly is not helpful. It may just be enough to tip Jackson on a downward spiral, especially if a large number of AAP students choose Thoreau over the next 2-4 years. This could cause the Jackson scores to slip, and this could ripple through the pyramid. It is a pattern that has been seen before. As for the effect on the county, it could make one more area of the county a no go zone. They already exist in the following pyramids - Mt. Vernon, Lee, Annandale, and Stuart and are spreading to Herndon and West Potomac. And actually there are already some in the Falls Church pyramid. Time will tell.

Agree with this, although Stuart and West Potomac are on a stronger footing than Annandale, Lee, and Mount Vernon. Herndon is a question mark, although that isn't really the School Board's doing, and now Falls Church is as well, due to the School Board's actively undermining the school over the years (delayed renovations and the fiasco at LJ).

It's not like Falls Church HS was one of the higher performing HSs in the county based on SAT scores.

Falls Church HS is 55% FARMS, 30% ESOL, 50% Hispanic. This has been the case for years. Their current and historical demographics are very similar to Annandale's current demographics.

Overall SAT averages are very similar for FCHS and Annandale. In fact, white kids at Falls Church HS have essentially the same SAT average as white kids at Fairfax HS, Hayfield, Annandale, and Edison. (about 1650 on the old scale). HHI has a lot of influence on academic outcomes.

Note that white kids at Lee, Mt. Vernon and Stuart/Justice are a solid 100 points lower than Falls Church, Fairfax, Hayfield and Edison. Lower HHIs ===> lower SATs. It's not fair to compare the overall average SAT b/c that is skewed by the different percentages of ESOL/FARMS kids in each school. By comparing white kids in one school to white kids in another, we are controlling for almost all of the ESOL kids and for most (not all) of the FARMS.

Lee, Mt. Vernon and Stuart are the bottom tier of FCPS.

Annandale, Falls Church, Hayfield, Edison and yes, Fairfax, are the next tier up.

Rezoning LJ isn't going to push it further than FCHS already is pushed: 55% FARMS at FCHS -- and yet, some kids who aren't dealing with poverty or language issues are still doing well. People who bought into the FCHS pyramid knew what they were buying. FCHS (including the FARMS and ESOL rates, as well as the SATs), is already priced into the housing market.

Falls Church HS is going to be pretty much the same as it always has been. Not the worst. Not the greatest.

Yes, I wrote that very carefully and that is why I ended it with 'Time will tell.' It is a possibility and not a certainty. The possibility should not be discounted and perhaps the FCPS School Board should not have put the school/pyramid in this position.

But, really, anything is possible. To go on and on about possible outcomes that MAY occur years from now, when there was a current (actual) problem (overcrowding at lj) that needed to be solved, and was somewhat, seems to be a waste of time and energy. Let it go already.
