Tell me about the University of Wisconsin

Wisconsin requires their athletes to meet more than the NCAA minimums (which are a joke). That doesn't mean every single athlete meets the same academic standards as non-athletes who are admitted.

Here are the current APR ratings -- gives you a better picture of academic quality of the athletes. Big Ten does well. Absolutely no one can say with a straight face that Northwestern somehow manages to lower their standards for athletes. Why do you think they suck so often? https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/5/10/15613274/ncaa-apr-scores-2017-bowl-eligibility

I know someone with a 22 ACT who played women's lacrosse at Northwestern. That made me realize that even at a school that has an excellent student-athlete reputation, athletes are held at much lower standards.

This will reduce the quality of the faculty. Of course, they will not defund the football team.

Agree with the first point.

They don't fund the football team. The UW athletic department has been operating in the black for decades and actually subsidizes the rest of the University; and they do things the right way, no bending of academic standards for the varsity athletes.

That made me laugh because no D1 program can make that claim. Heck, even the Ivies make accommodations for athletes.

I should have added, unlike other schools, including Northwestern, UW doesn't take NCAA Minimum Qualifiers. You have to have certain high school courses and you have to have a minimum ACT score, which is well above the NCAA clearinghouse.

It has cost UW a number of highly decorated high school recruits over the years, but it is what it is.

So don't laugh when someone makes a statement that you clearly know nothing about.

So, you're saying that players on the football team have the same academic standards to get in as regular students? They're averaging 1370 on the SAT with a 3.85 GPA? Really? The articles you posted said that they had higher standards than other DI schools they're competing against. This might very well be true, but it's a far cry from "no bending of academic requirements". If you think that you can field a competitive DI program and not accept kids with significantly lower qualifications than the normal student body at a place like UM, then it's not the PP who is making ignorant statements.

And just to underscore how absurd your statement is: https://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/paper-trail/2008/12/30/athletes-show-huge-gaps-in-sat-scores

"Georgia Tech had the nation's best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0. "

That's the best in the nation.

Also from the article: "Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits."

I’d rather be with in-state MD kids than a bunch of in-state WI or MI farm kids

I’d rather be anywhere but MD. That’s probably how most people think.

Lol.. U.MD has the 7th highest incoming SATs in the country among publics. More national championships , Nobels , Emmys , academy awards, fields medals , Pulitzers and impactful alumni than all the Va schools together. U.MD is for tough achievers which is a scary environment for shrinking violets.

As Maryland’s Kermit himself might sing, It’s not easy being Maryland. Maybe it’s be better to be Virginia, or Michigan, or Wisconsin or such....
