Started at community college and made big law - it is the law school that matters, not the undergrad.

And certainly not the high school.

True, to an extent, although undergrad major may matter.

My DC is white and thankful to be at TJ too. But I do think the point somewhat holds. Western part of the county. And among the families I known from ES and MS, nearly all of the Asian families have accepted without question that that having their kid attend TJ was the top priority. Whereas, the White kids and their parents evaluated TJ on a much more individual, each kid is unique basis.

I do think it is a little ironic in an area where so many white families accept without questioning that there is no college choice but UVA (or WM) and then do crazy things to get their kid in. But never ask themselves or their kids if a different college would be better.

Huh?

Stereotype much? How do you know what each family is thinking or discussing in private re: TJ or for that matter UVA?

Projection, probably.

DP. If one cannot gain admission to UVA after attending TJ, what, then, was the point?

First, the top 2/3 of any given TJ class can reliably gain admission. You don"t get in to UVA based on what, you did in Ms. Once you get to TJ, you largely start over. And you still have to achieve. Most kids know based on the numbers if they will get in when they apply.

Second UVA is not the best school for every kid. By a long shot. Some people on this board are so laser focused on how to get their kid into UVA. It's really not clear why. For me, it would be whether my kid could get into WM-- much better fit.

And third, you don't send a kid to TJ to game admissions. You send them for the experiences they have 4 years they are at TJ. If you and your kid do not want the 4 years with the unique classes and labs and peer group, don't send your kid. TJ is not for every kid. And if you are asking what the point is if UVA admission is not guaranteed, TJ is not right for your family.

Interesting fact: well over a third of TJ seniors applied to Cornell last year.

UVA and W&M would prefer not to admit applicants from NoVa.

+1

TJ or not.

You may have missed this the first dozen times it was discussed. You can see how NOVA does compared to the other areas.

Between 150 and 160 apply every year to Cornell.

It seems that Cornell is the only Ivy that appreciates TJ in the sense that the TJ acceptance rate is usually better than the overall rate. I think Cornell is the only Ivy in the top 10 USNW for undergrad engineering.

Many Ivy League schools are not the best or most interesting places for engineers. Too many people using the wrong unit of measure to determine the outcome.

The point of any choice of school, from pre-K to graduate or professional school, is the education itself.

Lot -- most? -- of TJ are grubby families that forego UVA for full merit ride to another college. And the elites offer such good financial aid, anyone under $200K has eyes on them for financial aid.
