This was at a Historically-Black College, and the government has invested in them for decades. In fact, Trump just recently signed an agreement giving them more clout. Why bite the hand that feeds you?

Right, they should be so grateful to have her over their own objections. Who are they to have an opinion about their own commencement ceremony? Or education?

They are supposed to be mature educated and open minded individuals who embrace diverse views. I guess their education failed them.

Maybe they know better than to sit through bull shit.

+1. Seems to me that they were smart enough to know that they were being used as pawns in a political pandering game. They were smart enough to know they were being fed BS and not chocolate pudding.

The school invited DeVos. Perhaps they should be complaining to the school administrators who are the ones using them "as pawns in a political pandering game"?

They DID complain to them!!! Their complaints were disregarded. Hence, the protests at the ceremony.

So they didn't get what they want, so instead of accepting that you don't get everything you ask for in life, they throw a tantrum like pre-teen children and ruin the ceremony for themselves and anyone else in attendance. Real mature.

What the fcuk do you care about what black college graduates do anyway?

I love all these idiots trying to defend the fragile fee-fees of a billionaire heiress. SHE IS THE ESTABLISHMENT.

Keep groveling suckers. Perhaps she'll drop a few crumbs into your bowl.

No offense, but it isn't patronizing to tell these adults HOW to protest? You want them to protest in the least objectionable and disruptive manner. That kind of defeats the purpose of the protest. And for the record, not all the students booed. Some QUIETLY turned their backs.

I saw the video. Sure sounded noisy and rude to me. Some may have quietly turned their banks, but others did not. Since there's no way to know which ones were belligerent, the entire school will look bad to some emoloyers, and it will work against these students. In some cases. And with the job marker as tough as it is, you don't won't to burn bridges before they're even built.

And adults don't protest like that. That's the point some of us are making. These "adults" are going to have a tough time dealing in the real world. Do you advocate them turning their backs on their bosses if they don't like the assignment or process?

Adults do protest like this and worst. And when did Betsy Devos become their boss. You are twisting facts to suit your purpose.

I agree with pp. By accepting and condoning behavior such as this in what SHOULD BE a dignified ceremony, we end up with people beating up others on airplanes, passengers assaulting flight attendants and crew when their flight is canceled, teens body slamming elderly people at the swimming pool, and other hateful and aggressive acts. Why should we be surprised that these entitled young adults grow up to expect the world to conform to their wishes?
Some people could use some lessons on kindness and appropriate behavior.

Keep reaching...keep reaching...I'm sure if you keep digging up your ass scraping around in all that bullshit eventually you'll find a turd of truth to justify your audacious argument - so keep reaching!!

Wow. Your extremely profound comment added so much to the discussion here.
Bet you are a great addition to the office meetings.

So thus far over these 7 pages we've heard various opinions and perspectives on the incident but only one person indicated how this demonstration will directly affect them...

Anyone else directly affected by these students turning their backs on a commencement address speaker?

What kind of tone deaf idiot asked her to come speak at this college in the first place? What did they expect?

Talk about missing the point. The ceremony is for the benefit of the students, not the speaker. We are not arguing over the feelings of the speaker - I don't really care much about how DeVos feels about this whole thing. The point is, they acted in a way that took away what was to be a dignified ceremony conducted for their benefit. We are sad for the students who did not behave in this way and despite having possible distaste for the politics of DeVos, would have preferred to have a normal commencement. There's a strong parallel between the behavior of this commencement and the rioting/looting in black communities when something happens that angers the community.

HBCU administrators have been shamelessly cozy with Trump. They think he is going to reverse regulations that make them accountable for student loan debt. I think HBCUs are vital but their administrators are shameless about not caring about student loan debt.

I'm sure that's exactly how it looks to the old f*cks who voted for Trump.

What a bigot you are.

Just calling it like I see it. Every single person I know who voted for Trump has made some racist comment at some point. Some more often and more loudly than others.

What about all the people who voted for Trump who voted for Obama the last time? All of a sudden they became racist? You need some new material.

Yep, it's much better to be a complete asshole as long as you have poise while you're doing it. It's all about the show.

And, for the record, while I sympathize with the graduates and think DeVos is a piece of shit, I'm not a fan of booing and back turning because it just gives DeVos' defenders' ammo to denigrate the graduates (as we've seen here). Dick Cheney was the speaker at my grad school graduation and I wanted to throw rotten fruit at him, but I didn't.
