Yes. First I did the fries. Then the coffe machine. Then I met the manager. Typical internship.

These are the hard choices. The hard choices of adulthood. And you accepting that she has, is starting to have her own life. And not everything works out. It's tough. It's sad not to spend time with family. That's life.

She could broach the subject with her internship. But don't make this about you - don't have her say, "My mom says I have to ... "

OP here: She does have some health issues that make it more of a "need" than it would be otherwise.

I am a nosy nelly and dying to know what health issue a teen has that requires them to take a vacation.

Helicopteralia Maternalis.

It's A debilitating and sadly commonplace ailment in this area.

That sounds great. I hope they offered you a job.

This thread is ridiculous. This is an unpaid internship in high school for gods sake! Yes, she should ask for permission to take vacation. If they say no, she will have to decide whether to take the internship or miss the vacation.

Can she meet up with you after the meeting? So she minimizes her time away?

As I read these responses, I marvel at how often families bagged or rescheduled vacations so as not to interfere with kid's sports training or mandatory high school sports practice in August. Clearly employers have less control over today's kids than coaches -- even when they pay.

Unpaid or not, it is still a work commitment that the OPs daughter committed to by both applying for and accepting. She understood it was unpaid when she decided to pursue the opportunity. If she was unable to work the entire agreed upon time due to an existing illness or personal issues, it should have been explored during the application and interview process, and the employer should have been given the opportunity to decide if she was still a suitable candidate, or if another student who could meet the time commitment would be preferred.

I agree with the PPs saying this is indicative of what the new workforce is like, and things like this are the reasons why. These kids are taught early that if something comes up in their private lives, they don't have to work around it.

Trust me, the same mom that thinks its not just okay but therapeutic for her DD to skip a week of internship for the family vacation will think the same thing when DD starts her first job after college. "But it's Beach Week! Just call in sick."

The application process was 5 months ago and the illness recently. But this teen should be shown to the door.

Yes I hate that. August is about the only time it is ok for some parents to take off from work. Because the whole office is out.

So much so a child has a difficult time going on a family vacation in the summer. I grew up poor and worked constantly as a teen. There was no money for family vacations. Now I am a mom who has teens and recently underwent chemotherapy for cancer. My advice is that if you are able to, take the family vacation! You will not always have this opportunity. Family time is very important in the grand journey of life!

+1 You are only a teen once, then you have much more responsibility in life.

Yeah....and if you don't want the responsibility of the internship you don't take it on.
