Yes but you could say you can get a 3/4 bd / 2ksqft house in the top suburbs of Fairfax for 500k. I just checked and you can get that in Great Falls, McLean might be $700k. Might be a fixer just like in Austin. Again, Austin is cheaper but not by as much as people would think. |
Are any of the previous posters talking about small towns? I got the sense that they are talking about small cities which still have millions of people. |
Such a good point. I spent my high school years in the MSP area, and still have fond memories. Lots of great companies in MSP -- Pillsbury, General Mills, 3M, Cargill, United Healthcare. Great schools and colleges/universities. Great cultural opportunities. Great airport that is a Delta hub. My DH and I seriously considered moving there a few years ago! I confess I just couldn't take the winters quite that far north, and also we like being within driving distance of mountains. I love the lakes there though (if not the mosquitos)! I am OK with winters in Chicago (which is milder in my experience). I'm glad that the PP enjoys it so much! |

The parking in DC is really out of control
I remember when you could actually find a free spot on a Saturday lol even Sunday is insane now at least everywhere is free Lots of better cities than DC Many have been mentioned Minneapolis Indianapolis Columbus Madison Philadelphia Baltimore Richmond Research Triangle NC, Charlotte Pittsburgh Nashville etc etc etc |
Only someone who actually cares about parking would recommend living in Columbus, Ohio. |
| NP here...have you ever been to Columbus? It's a great city. Lots to do, zoo, museums, huge market, parks and trails, affordable and beautiful neighborhoods, OSU, professional hockey...what's not to like? |
Maybe that it's in Ohio?? |
Lol this sounds crazy. What's wrong with Ohio? |
What a snob! |
| We did this. We moved from CA to Frederick, MD. No regrets. |
I'm a DC native and love it here. Lots of family, plenty of friends, great job, excellent schools, plenty to do, walkable, and my housing is affordable. I prefer urban living in a liberal city. ? |
Me too! It's all relative. Some move to CA from NYC. Some move from CA to DC. Those in DC may think about moving to Minneapolis. |
Columbus is a sewer. |
Heh - thank you for that response. I kept trying to think of an appropriate answer. How can you even question what the downside is to so much traffic and so much hassle getting from one place to another? |
Having looked pretty seriously in DC, Austin, and now some other cities: Austin is definitely cheaper than DC. It's not cheap, but it is cheaper. |
