Donate a lot of money. That's pretty much the tone of the place.

+1 Spot on.

Spoken by people who are clearly not part of the community.

Beauvoir's dominant tone is not about money. There are parents there who think it should be, but thank goodness they do not rule the school.

Unfortunately, there are assholes in every elite school, but the majority of parents at Beauvoir are nice, down-to-earth people and the administration and faculty are lovely.

And, if you tried to buy your way in, that would be a pretty sure way to get a rejection letter. No administration wants to deal with parents who think it's all about quid pro quo.

Agreed. I remember this thread and it seems like a lot of comments were deleted. There were a bunch of comments from pro-Beauvoir people saying some pretty nasty stuff (I remember what the PP mentioned about a Beauvoir parent insulting the intelligence of a non-Beauvoir parent's child), a lot of discussion about the Eric Toth pedophile scandal at Beauvoir, and also a fair bit of the "well, you're just sour grapes because there's no chance your kid would get in anyway, LOL." Not sure why those were deleted whereas other nasty comments in this thread -- and other threads -- have been left up.

They also like parents who are really into their children and put the child's needs first. I think that Ms. Hartigan has a deep personal love of children, which shines through so clearly when she's interacting with them. if there's one thing that almost all Beauvoir parents share, it's that they are unusually crazy about their kids. Yes, there are exceptions (so sad to see), but they are relatively few.

And, as with all private schools, they want people who will contribute to the vibrancy of the school community, not parents who just write checks and end their engagement there.

Is this for real? Non-Beauvoir parents are not crazy about their kids? [/quote

??? I don't want my sentiment to be misconstrued, so I won't be sarcastic, even though I really want to be. 99% of parents are crazy about their kids. 99% of parents deeply love their kids and would do anything in the world for their kid. To think that Beauvoir has isolated a perfect contingent of loving parents is a false and hurtful construct. of course, since you have to pass Ms. Hartigan's inspection to be a part of the community, even if you weren't a perfect parent, you better know how to fake it when you are on campus.

I can't help it, the sarcasm is back. do you think PAYING for an education means you are more crazy for your kid than I am? All it means is that you have disposable funds and are particularly susceptible to glossy marketing tactics by the marketing and development offices of this school.

I can't even see that as sarcasm. It's a legitimate response to one of the most inane, condescending, clueless, remarks I have ever heard from a Beauvoir parent. And we all know we have heard lots of them! But actually, now that I think about it, being in the Beauvoir environment, I have encountered many attitudes that would indicate mothers there whom I think really do think they love their kids more than average moms.

+1 to this. It's the smugness and condescending attitude that is most prevalent there.

You people are nuts. You clearly read way more into was she said and took it all kinds of personal. She said absolutely nothing about non-Beauvoir parents. The fact that a common trait of Beauvoir parents is that we are ridiculously crazy about our kids doesn't mean the same can't be said for parents of kids at other schools.

You should look up the definition of the word "unusually." "Beauvoir parents are unusually crazy about their kids" implies that the "usual" are, well, not so crazy about their kids. So where do the "usual" go? Not Beauvoir!

Just as your experience seems to be that a "common trait" of Beauvoir parents is "ridiculous" devotion to their spawn, my own experience with Beauvoir parents is that the most common traits are: a) white, b) rich, c) insecure, d) smug, and e) prolific employers of nannies.

Anonymous wrote:Jeff, did you edit this thread? I remember it from earlier in the week or last week when it was considerably longer, and nastier in tone (although it's already kind of nasty) with Beauvoir boosters being pretty insulting - like, even getting to the point of saying that people who didn't get in should question the intelligence of their kids. The thread also rehashed the Eric Toth scandal.

PP is right. A lot of mean comments from Beauvoir people were deleted. And all the Eric Toth-related comments too. Jeff, do you have an agenda here for your edits to this thread?
