| Hi - I will be applying my little one for PK4 admission. Any advice on how to stand out in the admissions process? Its the only school we want. Thx! |
Donate enough $$ for a new wing? |
| No advice. It's a numbers game. More people want their kid there than they have spots available. Just make sure your kid is well behaved and happy. Other than that - it's really just a lottery. Obviously they look at who you are and maybe potential $$ to donate but I think that's a small percentage. The bulk of spots go to normal kids and normal families. |
| There are a lot of lovely schools in this area with similar philosophies. I'd have an open mind and apply to other schools. As a side benefit, this might make you feel a little less desperate in your meetings with Beauvoir. Your child also might have a chance to participate in some play dates at other schools before the Beauvoir one. |
I don't know that Beauvoir needs a new wing (and where would they put it -- on the St. Albans field?). But I'd sure like it if the school or Cathedral did something with (even beautified) those ugly block buildings that sit right next to the BV building! |
| What are the names of the other local schools with similar philosophies? |
|
Troll. No one is this desperate, or this dumb.
Nice try, though. |

Don't be annoying during the process. Smile a lot and compliment the school. Thank your parent tour guide for their time and tell them how much you love the school.
Send a letter affirming it's your first choice and why. Tell them unequivocally that if offered a spot, your child will attend. That's about all you can do. |

Take the pressure off yourself (and the stress/anxiety that will be transmitted to your DC and more than likely result in a play visit meltdown!) by considering more schools. Be open minded. Even if you end up deciding not to apply or not to attend if your DC is admitted, think of it as fact-finding, and also practice for your DC in terms of going on play visits before the Beauvior one. And investigate your public options.
Other schools that seem to have the most overlap with Beauvior would be NPS, Norwood, Primary Day, and maybe WES (although frankly the actual differences in how the kids are treated and taught AT THE SCHOOL will be very similar whether at Beauvior versus very "progressive" schools such as GDS or Lowell-what will differ is how the families act/interact more than how kids/teachers interact). |
| They will smell desperate a mile away. Visit several other schools first to get familiar with process. Relax and act like you own them. |

Have you visited the school? We thought it would be our first choice until we attended the school. It's an undeniably wonderful place, but we thought DC needed a more intimate environment. I was surprised by my reaction because I was convinced ahead of time it was THE place for us. Also wanted to avoid applying to new schools again in only a few years.
Go for it, of course. Just keep in mind that there are a lot of great options out there. It's good to see a lot of examples, including progressive schools and other more traditional school so that you get a sense of the options. |
| Chances are you won't get in, so I would apply to other schools too. |
| I'm not the poster who suggested applying to schools with similar philosophies but as a parent with a child at Beauvoir I concur with the poster who said apply to more than one school. We really liked NPS and had our child not gotten into Beauvoir that would have been our next choice. It was actually a difficult decision. As much as a school should fit the child it should also fit the family. We have found Beauvoir to be a great fit in both respects but also felt like NPS met the same criteria. Good luck! Beauvoir is a wonderful welcoming place just as our many other DC privates are. And, there really is no ONE perfect school--you and your child can be happy at many different schools. Take it from some one who grew up here and went to several different DC privates. |
NPS, Potomac, Maret, Sidwell Idk what appeals to you about Beauvoir. Is it the name? That it is limited to lower grades? Feeder to elite schools? Educational approach? Class sizes? The above schools all have several similarities. You should schedule some visits. |
DC had no hook. We are not $$$, URM or legacy. Only thing DC had going was sweet, very verbal and kind to other kids on the play date. The AD is one of the most experienced in town and unlikely you can " sell her" on your child. She and her team will make their decision so I would just be yourself |
