Do you love your unusual name?

I like Chloe! Popular nowadays is not the same as popular in the 70's/80's. Back then 75% of the girls I knew were Jessica/Jennifer/Nicole or some variation of Christina. Nowadays there's a lot more variety in naming.

My name is Liat. (pronounced LEE-AHT, with accent on second syllable) It is an Israeli name very popular for Israeli women my age (mid 30's). It means "You are mine"...I hated it growing up, but I love it now.

That's very true. I never thought about it that way.

I've heard the nickname for Margaret can be Peggy. That makes no sense to me and I don't like the name. I don't like Maggie either. (that's not to say I don't like it as a name, just don't like it for MY child's name).

I don't like Ruthie as much. That's the thing DH and I have going on -- whatever we name our kid, we don't want it to be something with a nickname we don't like. Our boy name is pretty nickname proof but our girls name has a potential nickname that I don't care for. I guess we can just enforce the full name until the child is old enough to say for him / herself what he / she wants to be called. My sister is named Caitlin, and she's never once been Cait or Caitie or anything but Caitlin.

Totally agree--in fact, we crossed off my favorite name because is has a potential nickname that I don't care for, and I didn't want to risk it.

I also love the name Margaret, so much so that we named our daughter that. I liked the nickname Margie, but my husband didn't. Did you know that Daisy could be a nickname for Margaret? And I don't love Peggy either, but I think the Peggy nickname might come from the nickname Meg -- Margaret > Meg > Peg > Peggy, sort of like how Polly is a random nickname for Mary. Mary > Molly > Polly. (Weird but cool.)

I like the name Sasha as a nickname for Alexandra, but it sounds bad with our last name.

right--if you look at percentages on the SSA website evev the top 10 names are <1% of all names. although I have met half a dozen Sophie/Sophias in the past year. Its number one or two for our state.

Sasha is originally a boy's nickname for the name Alexander. It's Russian. In the US, it seems to be used mostly for girls. Although all the Sashas I know are grown Russian males.

I don't know why Sasha comes from Alexandra, I just know it does! It's originally a Russian/Slavic tradition (for Alexander, too).

Love that name! I was hoping to have a girl so I could use it, but have a boy instead.

My name is Nicolette and everyone always wanted to call me Nicole or Nicki - I don't mind these nicknames, but preferred my given name. I love it now! Apparently it is very popular in the Netherlands - I took a trip there and everyone thought that was my heritage.

My friend is fostering a baby named Marisol. I LOVE that name.
