As an aside, I know of a girl who went to one of the more middle-ish schools, did NOT have a 4.0 GPA or any particularly scholarly works. Was a cheerleader and worked summers at a local craft store. She got into 11 out of 15 schools including Penn, William &Mary, UVa, and others. I was kind of surprised since I thought you pretty much had to have above a 4.0 to get in those schools from NoVa.

She may have had terrific SATs. If she were working, she may have been a first generation college student which gives additional points. Also, it depends on how recently this was. She certainly must have had very good grades. Was this before the grade inflation?

What does that mean? My husband and I both worked through high school and we were not first generation college students. We fully expect our children to work so they learn the value of money, not because need financial assistance from our children.

Michigan viewed better than UVA? Enough to compensate for the cost difference between two?

Michigan is viewed better than UVA and Michigan offers good amount of merit based aid.

wait - but I thought there was a previous poster that said their state funding is decreasing. How can they off more merit aid if that's the case?

UVa is usually ranked higher than Michigan.

Michigan is ranked higher than UVA.

Outside of VA, Michigan is considered far better than UVa. It's a well known fact.

Historically, the top 10% or 50 are accepted each year. More variable but about 25 attend?

US News ranks UVa at #23 and Michigan at #29. Every list I've read ranks UVa higher than Michigan.

It's more highly regarded in the Northeast. Not sure about other areas of the country.

US News is nationwide and consistently ranks UVa higher than Michigan, going back well over a decade. Michigan might be more well known for sports because it is a Big 10 school, but UVa is better known for academics.

I personally wouldn't pay out-of-state tuition for Michigan when I could pay in-state tuition for the higher ranked Virginia. The difference between 23rd place for UVa and 29 for Michigan is not that great, but not enough to make it worth it to pay out if state tuition.

I had to LOL at the bolded sentence.
UMich and UVA are both terrific universities and it is not productive to split hairs, particularly with regard to US News rankings, which have been criticized to death. Both schools can provide great education and it is the matter of individual fit, finances and location for the families to decide where to send their child.

You are ranking obsessed. Do you even know how it's calculated?

As PP pointed out they are both good options for many students. But generally Michigan is well-regarded for undergrad and grad academics. Darden is also well-regarded. UVA undergrad is plagued with preppy, old boy network image. Not academics. At least once you leave VA.

Certainly UVA is a great value for VA residents. But it's not nearly as well-known outside of VA. That was my only point. It's a perfectly fine school.

Serious Question... What is UVa known for? I guess Business?

You do indeed only have one point, which is unfortunate, since it has no merit.

U. Va. and Michigan are both fine schools, so passive-aggressive attacks such as yours bounce off.
