The Students Who Got Into Eight Ivies Are All Children of Immigrants

But why apply to every single elite school?

She mentioned in her article. To hedge her bets. She doesn't know she will get into any.

Spoken like a successful wall street trader/tycoon. The dream of American capitalism at its best.

I dunno - I'm supposedly from a 'successful immigrant' group but it seems Ashkenazi jews are just a level above that my people can't get to. The latter have the intelligence and ability to 'blend in' with white people.

don't you mean they have the skin color to blend in?

The non-profit has a website, no funders, no board of directors and press-release type media mentions. Dozens of students entered! Hmmm...Kind of screams college resume fake.

The fetishization of top colleges continues apace.

No links to TED Talk speeches she's given, either!

LOL. My Jewish neighbor once talked about discrimination once other white folks discover that they are Jews. I laughed and said that I do not have a way to find out the "before" and "after" behaviour of Whites towards me because my skin color proclaims who I am.

The Students Who Got Into Eight Ivies Are All Children of Immigrants

Though there is a big difference between immigrants who are educated and legally here vs. immigrants who are uneducated and here illegally - is there not?

Undocumented children have every right to attend public schools, though they are ineligible for federal or state financial aid for college. However, most elite private schools will admit undocumented students and provide non-governmental financial aid regardless of immigration status.

Look, as someone else in this thread said, the student applied to all 8 Ivies "because she could". That's really the issue here. The common app has created a frenzy that allows students to apply to 15, 16 schools. In this case, no issues with the fact that the student is a child of immigrants...I say good for her! That said, I think this is more about TJ wanting the ability to "crow" about the fact that one of their brilliant students (and she is brilliant) got into all 8 schools. Those that are involved in the college counseling process know that each of the Ivies is noted for something unique. There is absolutely no way that one student "fits" all eight ivies. Thus, in reality, this student gave 14 students on the respective schools wait lists a shot at getting in.

So immigrants think they are being smart and have figured out the college admission system, since they are disproportionately represented despite terrible racial quotas. Getting into all the Ivies is and accomplishment and prestigious, not a stupid pet trick. They don't care what anyone else thinks of them.

The Ivy Leaguers think that applying to every one of the elite schools is silly and a waste of time and money and reflects a lack of understanding about how different the schools are. Just a lack of sophistication to see beyond the brand names.

Somehow I think this isn't quite the whole picture.

As a TJ student, her chances of getting into an Ivy school was much less because of the fact that most of her brilliant classmates were her competition.

Magnet HS kids routinely apply to multiple Ivies because of that.

I do not buy the concept of the "best fit". Most schools do a good job in imparting STEM education. Obviously, each school felt that she was a desirable candidate and chose her over many others.

Maybe the criteria that she was looking for was the academic reputation of the school vs. irrelevant (in my opinion) criteria like how pretty the campus is! Maybe she did not give great weight to rural/urban, party/non-party, climate, cuisine etc, when she applied to these schools.

It is not unusual for people to apply to the number of schools that she did. That she picked Ivies is her choice.

You tell me what these schools are looking for. "Look, this year we have a pair of Serbo-Croatian siamese twins who are also adopted. And a juggler. We have to have a juggler."

It's more about fitting the costume. It's now like auditioning for Barney or Sesame Street

Many people familiar with the Ivies and similar schools look at someone's applying and gaining admission to all of them as a "Stupid Pet Trick," even if they are too polite to say it. There are such differences among the schools that applying to all of them is not especially rational, unless the goal is just to get into an Ivy and/or show that you can kick ass with admissions departments.

If I was a teen living in NoVa going to TJ, I would definitely apply to numerous schools. Your peers are virtually all as smart as you and her race puts her at a disadvantage as far as admissions go. It's not like she was the the standout student in a mediocre school, they're all so talented and smart.

If this child was a white, black or hispanic student the posts would be completely different and that is the sad reality of DCUM.

I beg to differ. As a white immigrant, I wonder if my child's story will be deemed equally compelling just because we don't look very different from the despised "whitey"

Dear "Whitey",

If your kid has the same credentials I will find it equally compelling. However, your child will first of all need to have the same credentials and academic and EC record. Ok?

-Not "Whitey".

Huh. Someone needs to tell Obama this, considering his dept of education wrote letters to college admissions offices pushing a race-based selection process.

I don't think this pattern is an accident. First, these are incredibly talented young people whose parents were the best and brightest in their home countries and sacrificed a great deal to come to America. And, they have compelling stories to tell admissions officers. But, I think the other reason is that these are children and families who can't see beyond the top/best colleges lists because they are so new to America. Why else would anyone apply to every Ivy?

There is no chance that my DC will apply to every Ivy plus MIT, Stanford. We know the difference between the schools and the importance of fit and student culture. There is something wrong if a child doesn't get a different feel from CalTech than Brown or imagine themselves differently at Dartmouth than Columbia. In many countries, admission to higher education is strictly test based and hierarchically matched and applying to all the top schools seems like an attempt to replicate that format. They don't seem to fully understand the variation and diversity in colleges that we have in the US. And I wonder how much they realize that getting into college is only the beginning of adulthood, not a life outcome.

PS - Please, don't hate on these talented children. I'm just puzzling over an interesting dynamic.

This is the dumbest post ever. There are plenty of non-immigrants who apply to Ivies as well. What does being an immigrant have to do with it?!
