how much was your engagement ring?

$200. We had no money when we got married at 21. 18 years later my husband said we could get a better ring. But after looking around, I realized that I have been perfectly fine without an expensive ring and opted for a vacation to Europe with the family instead.

5k for mine, 450 for DH

Me too! I read an article recently on how the jewelry industry is the reason people feel they need the biggest and best diamond. It's all marketing. Most people don't realize that emeralds and ruby's are actually rarer and more expensive. I will ogle a beautiful emerald over a diamond any day. My sapphire may not be huge, but it's a beautiful deep blue and I love that my husband knew me well enough that he did not get me a diamond.

$0. Don't have one.

0 . Mine belonged to my DH's great-grandmother. I have no idea what it's truly worth. I have it insured for $28,000. I would have been furious if he had spent more than a couple thousand dollars on a piece of jewelry, especially a diamond. But my ring is beautiful. I love it mostly because of it's history. His grandparents were married for almost 70 years. We've been married almost 30. That ring has seen a lot.

About $60. We were in a beautiful exotic place when DH proposed and I loved the locallLy crafted jewelry. I picked out my favorite ring -- it's very sturdy, good quality, looks great with my wedding Ring. It's simple but representative of the place and a great conversation piece. Still love it as much after 14 years, as I love my DH!

Not going to play the "I'm so frugal" game.
We were able to buy a home, pay for a wedding and buy a very nice ring, so we did.
I wear it and I love it, not going to be weirdly reverse shamed for having an expensive ring?!

Funny thing is, i was obsessed with a nice ring, having it big, and costing alot. I wanted to show it off, have it sparkle flawlessly and of course, it would be with me forever!

Flash forward a year later, and im finding every excuse to take it off. Dishes, shower, gardening, swimming, working out, and after the baby so i dont scratch him. Ehh, i wish he spent less now.

The funny thing is that this didn't make him run like hell.

Lots of stupid rich here.

$600 for a .5 carat. Still happily wearing it 30 years later. He did "upgrade" on our 10th anniversary with a Tiffany's anniversary band, diamonds all around.

$1200 for a half carat ruby in 18k gold setting. My wedding band, just a plain, thin band, was $50. DH's band, plain gold but quite wide, was $450. He loves his wedding band and is never without it, which is sweet. I, OTOH, care less and less about jewelry as I get older (and I didn't care much to begin with); I rarely wear my engagement ring anymore but instead just wear my wedding band and even that I forget to wear sometimes.

Married 25 years.

I didn't really want one, at least not a diamond, but he insisted. I would rather have kept that money in the bank. Now we need IVF for $15,000 - which is exactly what he spent on the ring. Wish I could sell it (it appraised for $18K) but he'd never forgive me. It's beautiful, though - 1.71 carat round brilliant solitaire, very sparkly and clear, in a thin white gold band with tiny diamonds. Very simple.

If you give a family heirloom as an engagement ring and then get divorced, doed she get to keep it? I didn't by my DW an engagement ring per se. I proposed over a bowl of Frosted Flakes in the kitchen of my aparrnt largely because either the spirit, my stupidity or my penis moved me.

Mine was about 22k - 2.1 carat solitaire. I don't wear it very often but when I did, people used to stop me all the time and comment on how gorgeous it is.

Ug, big rocks are so tacky! I can't believe how much some of you paid.
