Arghh MCPS Math!

Inefficient and incompetent people are everywhere. How many times we look at upper management at work and wonder who put these idiots in power? Look around you, there is not a single agency where people are not incompetent, lazy and inefficient.

I mean we are on this forum discussing MCPS policies and Starr and BOE and curriculum ...and not a single Korean, Chinese or Indian was in position of power here. So, its a worldwide phenomenon.

Excellent point. MCPS would not be in this education mess if there were other representative constituents in positions of leadership -- particularly from high performing groups!!!

Actually I don't think that the PP's point was that MCPS would be better if the superintendent were a Korean, Chinese, or Indian immigrant. But I am not the PP.

I am not the PP you are referring to. I do not think that poster was insinuating the Superintendent needed to be African, Indian, Korean or Chinese; rather, the leadership and decision makers in MCPS do not represent the high flying and performing constituents. Do you think parents and school leaders from these groups would favor holding their children back in subjects like math? I doubt it? Who is making the decisions about the MCPS curriculum, math, science, computer science education, English etc. I doubt these decisions are coming largely from the immigrant populations. if the MCPS leadership (top down) reflected the MCPS population we would not be in this mess.

Guess what the MCPS leadership doesn't represent the low performing or the high performing very well. They created c2.0 and think all students should learn the same thing at the same pace in the same classroom.

Yup, if the MCPS leadership represented their constituents they would have a much better chance of getting things right!

•Hispanic/Latino: 28.5%
•Black or African American: 21.5%
•Asian: 14.2%
•Two or more races: ? 5.0%
•American Indian or Alaskan Native: ? 5.0%
•Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander: ? 5.0%
•Students receiving free & reduced-price meals (FARMS): 35.2%
•Students ever receiving FARMS: 43.3%
•English for speakers of other languages (ESOL): 13.9%
•Students receiving special education services: 11.7%

I find it hard to consider AP calculus in 11th grade as "holding children back".

Now take a look at the Board of Education, the Superintendent and Associates, the Principals, the charge of the magnet programs and the HGC ....

We all have our imaginary ceilings based on our kids and our experiences.

I'm the PP that made the "in 50 yrs comment". I don't think the future generation Asian American success in those types of jobs can only be attributed to the parents' sacrifices. It is more cultural. By and large, in the Asian culture, you don't question authority. That means you don't question the professors, the leaders of the company or your superiors. This is the reason why most Asians don't do well in those types of jobs. You see more Asian Americans be more successful in those types of jobs because they grew up with the some of the American attitudes of being open and questioning authority.

They suspect that it was this Asian type of culture that caused the Asiana crash in SF, which was a Korean airline. They suspect that the copilot knew something was wrong but didn't want to question the pilot who was his superior.

But, I think even those Asian countries are starting to change their culture, ever so slowly. So, who knows.

PP here. I'm talking about a culture where they don't question authority, not that incompetent people don't exist everywhere. I was addressing the statement that you don't see many Asians in certain types of positions.

Yes, they are unrepresentatively white, English-speaking, and non-poor. What's your point?

As it happens, Starr proposed efforts to increase the diversity among MCPS staff, whereupon DCUM had a fit on grounds that "brown-skinned" and "unqualified" are synonyms.

That sounds very profound, but what exactly do you mean by it?

Are there any Korean, Indian, Chinese, African or other immigrant Americans holding any MCPS leadership positions: Board of Education, Superintendents and Associates, Principals, HGCs and magnet program leadership ...???

The point ... you have just uncovered why MCPS is a mess!

Who is DCUM? Are they White?

Sooner or later when there is an increasing divide or gap between the MCPS leadership and the students and families they purport to serve you get a royal mess!
