When I toured colleges with DD, I was shocked how luxurious the campuses were. Fabulous dining halls, wonderful food, huge, spanking new athletic facilities at every single one, glittering science centers, etc. etc. The only thing most of them still skimp on are the dormitories.

If they spend more $$ on FA and less on facilities, college would cost a lot less, and more middle class families would be able to send their kids to private schools.

Our family is not eligible for FA. I've done the financial aid calculator on the Harvard, Princeton and two other selective SLAC websites, and we qualify for nothing, which is shocking to me. If the schools cost $30K, well, OK, I could see it, but at $60K+ suggesting we can "afford" these colleges is crazy.

Our DD is going to go to in-state schools unless she gets merit aid from the privates.
UMD is $100k for four years of in-state tuition with room/board. While that is far from $60k/year, it's still a lot of money. Live at home? You can go to UMD for about $12,500/yr with tuition and public transportation fees. Most kids do not want to live at home.

So, again, while UMD is acgood deal relatively speaking, $100k is still a lot of cheese.

^^The figure I quoted for UMD annual tuition includes fees, books, etc.

Both parents income is considered, not just yours.

Why so? We were never married, but child support is dispursed through the courts.

Your kids have two parents. Dad is paying child support so he is contributing.

And you had 3 kids with him so that's a little different than a one night stand when you were 17. He's the father of your children whether or not you chose to get married. The schools don't care about that.

Would if the mom claims the kids on her taxes and not the dad? She doesn't have to list the father on her FASA app does she?

It's a better deal for those of us who did the prepaid, hoping our kids will be accepted.

Unless Dad has signed away his parental rights in a court of law and is completely out of her life, his income is on the FAFSA too.

Great deal if you prepaid. Not everyone is as fortunate.
