Is child support factored into your total HHI? I'm a "single" mom of 3 making 100k/yr and receive about $800/month for all three kids. Do I have a shot at FA? I'm a DC resident and hoping my DS will be able to take advantage of the 10k DC gives for public Institutions. |
Both parents income is considered, not just yours. |
Why so? We were never married, but child support is dispursed through the courts. |
You misspelled "dispersed" and also confused it with "disbursed." |
You definitely will qualify for FA in this case. |
My alma mater (a SLAC) is a school that does only need based aid, no merit based aid. They allocated their financial aid based solely on demonstrated financial need based on FAFSA and CSS profile. However, they don't have a large enough endowment to be 100% need blind. From people I know who have worked in the admissions office, what they do is assemble the class they would like to have, and then make adjustments for the marginal students based on what they can allocate for financial aid. If the college is a "reach" school for you, you are more likely to get in if you are full pay. However, if you are a solid applicant, it's unlikely to impact the decision to admit you. |
^^Yep. DD applied to 3 reach privates (top 50, not elite) with similar admission stats and checked "no" to the question if she'd apply for financial aid. She was accepted to 1 of the 3. It was her first choice so maybe demonstrated interest helped as well. But I'd be surprised if $60,000 paid in full wasn't a factor. |
I like you. |
Your kids have two parents. Dad is paying child support so he is contributing. |
+1. We know a girl who's dad makes a good income but declined to contribute. She got no FA because of his income, and she got no help from him either. |
I wonder how state school look at OOS students when it comes to FA? |
I would imagine a state schools is going to mine OOS pool for full-pay students given the budget issues. Esp at top state schools, the demand for a seat is high enough that they can focus the OOS pool on mostly full pay I imagine. |
I highly doubt brown is stingier than CMU. |
The thing no one mentions is why on earth these private schools cost so much!!
When I toured colleges with DD, I was shocked how luxurious the campuses were. Fabulous dining halls, wonderful food, huge, spanking new athletic facilities at every single one, glittering science centers, etc. etc. The only thing most of them still skimp on are the dormitories. If they spend more $$ on FA and less on facilities, college would cost a lot less, and more middle class families would be able to send their kids to private schools. Our family is not eligible for FA. I've done the financial aid calculator on the Harvard, Princeton and two other selective SLAC websites, and we qualify for nothing, which is shocking to me. If the schools cost $30K, well, OK, I could see it, but at $60K+ suggesting we can "afford" these colleges is crazy. Our DD is going to go to in-state schools unless she gets merit aid from the privates. |
And you had 3 kids with him so that's a little different than a one night stand when you were 17. He's the father of your children whether or not you chose to get married. The schools don't care about that. |
