| Invariably these posts are from parents plugging the schools their kids are attending... |
Sorry you're so defensive about a school you "never went to". A lot of people find VT to be highly unappealing. My DC had zero interest in applying. To each their own. |
| Radford University has a gorgeous, easily walk able, smaller campus lined with magnolia and oak trees with meticulously-maintained landscaping. As former RU tour guide, I can tell you that parents and students alike were pleasantly surprised by the campus atmosphere. |
Did you visit? We toured as a family. I was so impressed. I had never been to VT before. No Hokies or current students here but one DC wants to apply there ED for engineering. |
NP here. Maybe people could have different reactions to a school? I recently saw VT for the first time this spring. Definitely thought it was distinctive and impressive - and was, in fact, surprised by the scale and grandeur of the campus. My own DS found it somewhat cold and austere, but I could certainly appreciate why others might see the positives as outweighing the negatives. |
| ^^ fully agree. |
| We toured VT right after UVA. DC loved VT and hated UVA (yeah, go figure). She loved the feel of the VT campus and how centralized around the drill field it felt compared to some of the sprawling campuses we had seen. She loved the motto "to serve" (or something like that - I'm not a Hokie nor am plugging the school for any reason). We happened to hit the campus on a glorious day and had a great tour guide. Food was wonderful. Faculty were very interested in DD and outgoing. Students everywhere and all were smiling. Admissions officer was outgoing and fun. DC was beaming by the end of the day. A lot of how kids react to schools turn just on how they feel that day and what kind of tour they have (tour guide at Drexel was hideous - she couldn't say a word without a "like" or "um" before or after the word). UVA didn't sing to her, VT did. Go figure. But she wants engineering so VT would be a good pick. And we're Virginians so the price is right. Now just to do that application ED and get in ........... I truly hate this process. |
| ^^Just an aside, don't be discouraged if your DD doesn't get in ED. DD knows several very strong local applicants this year who were denied ED and accepted RD. Engineering is very hard to get into. Good luck! |

Thanks 10:21. I know the Engineering College is tough to get into. And admissions office seemed to want to push everyone away from ED because they do take so few and waitlist so many. I have a question you may be able to answer. Since you have to apply to two colleges when applying - and DC wants engineering - I know she can put down the Undecided College (forgot name) - but if engineering is all she wants, does anyone ever leave the second college choice blank. We would like to go ED (binding) because we did that with older child and it saved us the enormous hassle of multiple applications and the expense of tours. But I understand that if you don't get into Engineering, you can eventually get in but you may then spend five years at VT because as an Undecided you may not be able to take the entry Engineering class first year. Is that true?

This exact scenario was asked here recently and there several different (and opposite) answers. I never ever call the colleges -- but I'd call to ask this specific question. |
VT grad here - oh yeah! Best of luck to your daughter. I hope she is accepted and has just as lovely an experience as I had. It is truly a special place. |
| I thought Clemson was surprisingly attractive. I associate South Carolina primarily with hot weather and the coastal areas, but the campus was in a small town near a lake and the mountains. Very friendly vibe as well. |

| Re VTech food: the silver lining to DD's rejection from VTech engineering was her belief that it would save her from gaining 15 pounds by Thanksgiving break (as many of her friend have). The food is really good! |
