Not to me. To me anything that's six figures is a lot.

Sorry to rain on your ideological parade, but a HHI of $145K with two kids in daycare is hardly a life of luxury. Since DW went back to work, I've been dinged with late fees on mortgage, HELOC, both daycares and of course my bank due to NSF, it's nearly impossible to split the first paycheck on mortgage plus a month of daycare. Thankfully, I've worked out weekly payments with daycare.

Oh and I had to apply for a reduction in my student loan, so now I get to pay more interest over the life of my loan.

While I agree with you that $150k hardly buys the luxury a 20 year old version of me would have thought, your problems sound more budgetary than income oriented. Cut what you can and reduce your stress.

Why do Feds get bonuses?

Just added up my 2013 pay stubs

203K Gross, $250 bonus

Spouse made 130K Gross, 0 bonus

I have a friend who makes about 160K and relies on his yearly 20K bonus. I don't get bonuses, if you rely on them isn't that just like a salary?

Interesting that you classify yourself as normal middle-class at this salary level. Only in DC and DCUM would someone say that!

I would never consider myself normal middle class, as it relates to our income:

DH is at $205K, no year end bonus as he gets his annual bonus in April which will be around $75K, and he gets about 350 stock awards per year which vest over 4 years. Right now he has about $100K in stock, of which 25% is about to vest.

I make about $40K part time. no bonus but I'm grateful to have the job.

I think this puts us NEARLY in the top 1%? how is that normal middle class?

I'm not PP but in a similar boat. I make about $200, spouse about $100k. It's a good income but our life is decidedly middle class - we live in a modest home, drive old cars, etc. Even our jobs are "middle class" jobs - we don't work on Wall Street or high finance, just regular corporate gigs. If you define middle class by income, I guess we are excluded but otherwise I'd say we fit the mold.

You must be doing something with your money? I don't know which mold you think you fit.

Does your spouse make more than $400,000 or something? Otherwise, it's not possible for your bonus to be cut "nearly" in half. You'd have 25% withholding plus FICA, so it would be reduced by a third.

our HHI is about 250k. I ran a calculator online, and I am told my 10k bonus will net me $5800. I hope that is wrong.

My payrolls with bonus always work out to around 50 percent withholding. It's annoying and it's because of the way payroll is run. Calcs withholding as if I make that much every 2 weeks.

You don't count as normal middle class, FYI.

155K (last year). Last year, I got a 10K bonus, which was larger that past bonuses by a factor of 2 or 3. I do not expect a bonus next year

It depends on where you live and mortgage costs.
