S/O Isn't Christmas about Christ?

Congrats! You are Unitarian- Universalist! Welcome to the club!

I thought so too - but I feel like Jesus is completely missing in the UU church. I feel like it would be fine to discuss his teachings (and those of other prophets) but that hasn't been the case at the two UU churches I've tried.

i hear you! Look for UU churches that have a more Universalist bent than Unitarian. (For example, Universalist Memorial on 15th St NW, rather than All Souls Unitarian on 15th St NW.) UU ministers that lean Universalist are AMAZING. Truely inspiring and based on the New Testament.

Other possibility is United Church of Christ, but they may lean a bit too much into Jesus as Messiah for you. Good luck in your faith journey!

Just a thought on the "Jesus is a prophet and not the divine son of God". Something C S Lewis wrote on this was profound (at least to me). He wrote that one cannot think of Jesus as merely a good man, a wise religious philosopher, a mere prophet. Lewis points out that Jesus clear in claiming his divinity (He told the woman at the well and also plainly stated this during his trial before his crucifixion). Since he claimed to be the Son of God (capitals intentional), if this was not true then he would be guilty of falsely leading people astray if it was not actually true. So it would be an extraordinarily evil thing for him to lead people to follow him as the Son of God, if he were not actually the Son of God. In other words, Jesus was either the Divine Son of God, the Savior, OR...he is responsible for leading millions and millions of Christians on a false path throughout the ages.

Lewis says there is not logically any kind of middle ground on Jesus.

Suppose his words in this instance were misrepresented? Suppose he was speaking in metaphorical terms? There is a bunch of middle ground on this.

There are no recordings of what Jesus said, so other religions can claim that Jesus was a prophet and have their own text on what his words were.

Oh, its so easy to scoff, and to mock, isn't it, pp?

Well, do you know who else was mocked and scoffed at?

Any guesses?

Well, let's just say he has a birthday coming up soon.

Let's see, no response to the actual point of my post (so I'm guessing that you did pay for that IQ test and the associated bogus results, either that or you just made it up) and it looks like you're comparing yourself to Jesus.

Wow. 0 points for intelligence AND 0 points for humility.

As for the upcoming "birthday," you know how you look at the calendar and it says, "Washington's birthday" on one days and "Washington's birthday observed"? Well, Christmas is kinda like that.

We observe and celebrate the birthday on Dec. 25, but while it is possible that Jesus was born in the winter, it's highly unlikely based on all of the evidence in the Bible and associated historical texts.

Among other things, the fact that the shepherds and sheep were out in the fields might well suggest the birth occurred during some other season of the year.

According to the description of the weather conditions found in Luke 2: 8-15, it sounds like the a warm autumn evening, rather than the cold, rainy, and possibly snowy weather that usually happens in late December (which forces the shepherds to bring their flocks down into the valleys near their home).

For further discussion about the debates over the actual date of Jesus' birth and whether it was even appropriate to celebrate it, you might look at http://www.ucg.org/holidays-and-holy-days/when-was-jesus-christ-born/

There is a lot of evidence to support a birth prior to October, at the latest.

LMAO!!! PP wins dumbest poster of the year and most ignorant Christian!
Muslims, Jews and Christians worship the same God. Jews do not believe Jesus was the Messiah. Muslims do not believe he was the Messiah either, but a prophet.

This is not true. Everyone worships Jesus, even if they call him by differant names.

As for being the dumbest poster of the year, I had my IQ measured once by a profesional service, and the machine actually broke. They told me I was quote unquote "off the charts".

Was that "professional service" a psychiatric hospital by any chance? I think you and they were referring to different charts.

Or suppose that the terms "Son of God," and "Messiah" would've meant something entirely different to a Nazarene Jew from that time period - mortal, human titles given to a man, like King David, rather than a supernatural "Messiah."

Shhh... Me thinks so too. But PP needs to believe that everyone worships Jesus and that her IQ is high... Otherwise she becomes unhinged.

Very true. Many high priests were called "messiah". And aren't we all children of God?

OK, these calumunies have to stop.

I am not dumb. I was offered a place at a leading public Ivy. As it happens, I turned it down to pursue my own individually-led curriculum, which has resulting in my establishing an extremely successful studio.

Nor am I crazy. I have never sought psychiatric evaluation. I have been blessed with extraordinary mental health, despite all my trials, for which all thanks goes to Him.

However, do you know who else was accused of acting crazy? Mark 3: 21.... Let's just say that it was someone for whom I, and every other person in the world apart from a few bitter harridans on DCUM and their tweed-wearing four-eyed profesor husbands, will be celebrating a birthday in thirteen days time....

Comparing yourself to Jesus, again, eh? Your humility knows no bounds.

Had you accepted that place at the "public Ivy" you might've learned the "Rules of Holes," which says "The first thing to do when in a hole is stop digging."

Oh, where to start...
First, it's calumnies. And it means misrepresentation intended to harm another's reputation. This is an anonymous board, so we are in no way tarnishing your reputation.
I actually went to a public Ivy. And was accepted to many public Ivys. But I will never actually say that, because we all know a degree from a public Ivy will never carry the same clout of a true Ivy. And they are in no way as difficult to get into as a true Ivy.
IQ is not measured by machines. Brain activity, yes. IQ, no.
And in no way do Hindus, Buddhists, and Jews worship Jesus.

+1. Exactly.

People on DCUM like to spout this pagan history as if is they are so cool and knowledgeable, and no Christian is aware of the origins of the celebration. Grow up. People can be fully aware of the origins of the celebration, and yet still be actually celebrating what the holiday has developed into.. I would guess that most folks in the DMV who celebrate Thanksgiving did not actually grown any crops this summer that they need to survive the winter on. They were celebrating what the holiday has become, not how it started.

Yes, and the "keep the Christ in Christmas" die-hards need to recognize this, too. You can't cognizant that holidays evolve and then be upset when they evolve into something that you don't like. "Christmas" has become a massive, two-month long extravaganza that means different things to different people. I considered myself an atheist, but hell yeah we do Christmas at our house. Light on the baby Jesus and heavy on the gifts, decorations, and parties. The "real" way to celebrate is whatever you want.

I am furious that your methods of celebrating Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men differ from from mine!

I am not "comparing myself to Jesus". I am just hinting that there are valid comparisons that might be drawn.

And had you avoided your fancy university, you might've learned the "Rules of A-holes" which says "Don't argue about stuff that everyone knows, like Jesus being born on December 25th, because you will get your ass handed to you."

QED.

Oh joy. A pair of atheists beating up on a religious person and throwing the same worn out snark ("unhinged," et cetera) in badly punctuated (look up ellipses) quips. Do you guys ever step back and wonder how the rest of us perceive you?
