People flunk out of Cornell. I nearly did. By contrast, I had a friend at Harvard who was struggling and the school seemed to put a lot of effort into keeping him there and getting him to graduation. My mother died my freshman year, and I got very little support from the university.

Another vote for choosing a school for reasons other than its prestige.

We were appalled when we visited Cornell. It is HUGE, and there is no way that undergrads are getting personal attention there. They barely tolerated families visiting to see the campus (charging for parking, for example). We were leaning towards SLAC's when we toured that place (just out of curiosity), but after seeing it, we were SURE that we wanted the level of attention and faculty interaction that Cornell does NOT offer.
