Not to sound ignorant - which is so easy to do on DCUM - but how is it possible that what's been said on these 5 pages cannot effect the DC economy/housing?
It seems that everyone believes our economy is untouchable...even in the face of sequestration. If anyone can explain to me how this WILL NOT negatively effect our economy, that would be appreciated.
It will. It's just that most DCUMers don't want to think about it.
No kidding. Instead they speculate about the potential to buy cheap houses on the same thread started by someone who just got furloughed. So incredibly sensitive .
It is not being insensitive it is simply reality. I'm the one that started the housing comment and YES, both my DH and I are in a worse position than the feds because we work for private industry. They don't furlough us, they TERMINATE our EMPLOYMENT. I would take a furlough over a termination, but that is not our reality being in the private sector. Furlough is a gift in this climate. The private sector is crushed and people in this area have been running for years to the government and government contractors for cover, now there is no safe haven. No jobs to be had a contractors or private industry. You think a private sector employee will find work now? Please. Yes, I will speculate over the bubble. The bad economy has come our way, and I can assure you the rest of the nation is weeping crocodile tears for our plight. The rest of the nation would like to see Federal employees and contractors burned alive at the stake. This has been their reality for 5 years now. Hopefully people have taken advantage of the bloated spending since 2001 and saved their money. No one thought the band would just play on forever, did they? Even if they kick the can down the road, which of course will happen after they stop with their posturing and calling each other "dumb", then it is still a long sick painful process before the chicken comes home to roost. This will impact every single person in the DMV. Even if you do not directly benefit from government and defense spending, you are ignorant to think you don't. We are going to get squeezed by higher taxes on the state, local, and fed levels, while continuing to lose our jobs in droves.
Really hefer? One of the reason for lowering of home value will be foreclosures. This makes you feel good you and your private working DH can get a deal? What makes you think we haven't already been impacted? I am living paycheck to paycheck. This furlough is dangerous for me and my kid. And as I mentioned before I have provided well over a decade of service at a reduced piblic service rate. This is a fuck you of astronomical proportions. And the comments and behavior from Boerher and President Obama today are just salt in our wounds. Bet they keep a steady paycheck this year. Hey maybe they can get in on some of those after bubble deals you mentioned.-op |
| You all stupid. contracts are funded through the fiscal year so no lay offs yet . Just excuses to cut dress weight. |
Dead weight LOL |
Actually, you're wrong (note, I've refrained from name calling). Almost every government contract can be terminated at any time - and many are. Still more contracts are facing funding delays meaning that contracting firms are working essentially for free until the government releases the funds. |
Our contract period of performance started 1/1. We were expecting budget cuts so were told to only fund one quarter of work at a time. And we only tasked our most critical work. The rest will get cut. Our contractors will likely lay people off. |
|
At my Agency I'm told that we've managed well enough to have cut back and saved enough $ to avoid a furlough with a 5% cut (the projected cut).
But the White House has decreed there WILL be furloughs for all regardless. Another big FUCK YOU very much to Congress & Obama (for whom I voted twice). We'll be OK, many of my colleagues will not. |
Don't know what your powers to be are telling you guys, but Coast Guard saved their money through cut backs and contractors. Personal specifically told no furloughs. |
I think someone isn't being straight with you. My agency is having no furloghs. |
|
For those with jobs in the fed, I'd love to work there even with furlough. You don't go through layoffs every fucking quarter. You have a steady paycheck and benefits.
Signed, Laid off worker |
I think you are misunderstanding what is happening. Either the contract entitles them to periodic progress payments or it does not (at which case they would be paid at the end). If they are entitled to periodic progress payments, they cannot be asked to work "essentially for fee until the government releases the money." If they were not entitled to periodic progress payments, the contractor always agreed to work without payment until the completion of the contract. |

Looks like the Navy is taking it hard.

Yep, 22 days of furlough. Ships docked. Training and travel eliminated, including training and travel essential to the job. Not just navy, but dod period. |
I work on a CG program through a government contractor and my program was funded through 2019. In fact, all FIVE of the programs support are funded. I work my ass off for the government, and in part - time hours. Some of us do work!!!!! |
No one said you did not work hard. A lot of people who work hard have been affected by what is going on with congress' ineptitude. CG has decided to defund contractor positions over furloughs. If you live in a state, you are fortunate to have voting congressional representation. I suggest you contact your senator and congressman/woman. |
