the mason-dixon line is where? the border of MD and DE thereby putting MD in the 'south'. MD is a police state and in VA we prefer low taxes, better schools and public services and personal liberty. MD has the legacy and investments made 30, 40, 50 years ago. it has much better and many more options for private school than VA because VA used to be farms and hinterlands. that era is long gone. Today, VA (FFX county) is the economic hub of the entire region. yes, if you commute to DC traffic sucks, especially bridge crossings. yes we have an idiot ideologue for a governor. real estate in similar suburbs is generally the same (Chevy Chase is to Arlington as Bethesda is to McLean as Potomac is to Great Falls) - no one can say real estate in close-in NOVA isn't profitable and the transaction costs in VA are much lower than MD. btw, have any you marylanders actually spent time past gaithersburg? hagerstown isn't exactly the bastion of informed opinion and liberal thought and the western part of the state could be mistaken for alabama.
Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac. Attached to NW DC. Many in those areas of MD and NW DC consider Mclean/North Arlington/Great Falls to be worthless trash. Based on people I've met VA does seem to have more people who purchase their upscale homes based on earned income with no inheritance or assist from familial resources. Those who came from low income to middle class families and worked hard. Went to public or low cost parochial schools. Except for pockets in Alexandria and Country Club Hills.
True but the nouveau riche of VA are annoyingly arrogant about their wealth in my experience. They view everyone else who hasn't "made it" as lazy and inferior. Their sense of superiority is astounding.
and the old money that is potomac and bethesda - these folks don't also thumb their noses at the rest of the working and up-and-coming? it's the same crap on either side of the river. there are equal pockets of conservatism and liberalism in the close-0in areas of MD and NOVA, which is all that we are really talking about. The rest of the states are also equally redneck, backward looking and simply don't matter. what I do give MD the nod for is that Annapolis is far better than Richmond as place to visit - though there is Williamsburg.
