Yet another post about 5-6 year old boys in the women's changing/bathroom at the pool.

My kids are just 1 and 3, but I feel comfortable with them being naked at the pool - anywhere around the pool grounds. Other kids are sometimes naked too. This seems like a little joy of childhood. Thank heavens they're not at all self conscious yet. Too bad that they'll have to conform to all this uptight cultural stuff soon enough.

As for kids (or anyone) looking at my naked body in the changing room, I just don't care at all.

Another poster who is not comfortable with letting my 6 yo boy go into the men's licker room alone. I also don't mind if other mom's have to bring their boys in.

I don't see thing happening often but when I was 9 I was still going into the mens locker room with either my dad or big brother and it was completely accepted. If one of them was uncomfortable being naked with a girl in there all they had to do was turn the other way.

You are absolutely right. When I was a little girl I accompanied either my dad or my older brother and I was made to understand that I was NOT to stare and not to make remarks.

I think the idea is that it's ok because it's not full frontal. By staying turned the other way they can preserve their male modesty.

For you, it's natural to completely take your clothes off and strip your child down in a public setting because you feel that is what the room is for. Others are doing the same thing, so what's the big deal? To me, I can think of several ways to address changing if necessary, that don't involve exposing my bare breasts, vagina, or the parts of my children to strangers who have no business glancing even if it's unintentional.

I don't understand what the mixed message. It is in appropriate to take your clothes off in places that are not designated for that purpose. Is it okay to take your clothes off in the living room when company is over? No, the living room is not a designated place for nudity. Bathroom and bedroom are fine. Locker room is fine. Pool is not.

Your children are smarter than you think they are. Trust me. You don't want your kid to be the one who is panicky and afraid of changing in the locker room in high school. It's really not a big deal.

Your high school ocker rooms are co-ed? The whole question here is about opposite sex. I am sure many teens would be a bit panicky about changing in front of opposite sex peers.

What did people do in the old days? There were big community pools at the park district. The pool houses were simple cinder block buildings with one locker room for men and one for women, the showers were a row of shower heads on the wall and everyone was required to take a nude soap shower before entering the pool area to keep the bacterial level down. How did we survive in those days?

When was this? Back when men and women had to swim on separate days? Or later when pools were segregated by race because whites built private pool clubs? Either way I wouldn't want to go back to the old days.
