Ok, could very well be, the grates in the back of dryer get out of wack and snag shirt, especially the thinner material. |
My neighbor and I get these tiny holes in our shirts also
I think something is eating up these shirts . I have put them in a plastic zip bag to see if that works. I am so upset with this, I do think these bugs come in from other countries . Joanne |
I have many t-shirts and shirts has so many holes and wonder why. This drive me crazy especially I've got so many holes in my nice expensive BODEN shirts. I really hate this!
I know few things though -- Not caused by moths/bugs. There are no holes on my husband shirts which we share walk-in closet. Plus, there is no holes on my back or shoulder. Just around my tummy. Not caused by washing machine. I wash all of our shirts and pants in this same washer. I only get holes on my shirts. Not my husband or kids shirts. Just mine. Plus, why don't I get any holes on other part of my shirts like back or sleeves? Just around my tummy on the front. Not caused by seatbelt. I do not drive or ride a car so much. My husband drive a car all the time and wear seatbelt every time. He has no holes in his shirts. Not caused by zipper or jeans button. I do get holes on my shirts even when I wear leggings and sweatpants. Kids wear jeans with zipper and their shirts untacked. No holes on their shirts but mine. Not caused by beer/soda bottle top. I do not drink beer/soda and do not use shirt to open any bottle. Still I get holes on my shirts. There are several possibilities that I saw online and I think those are quite right. -- Granite countertop. My kitchen countertop is granite and my work desktop is granite. Holes started to appear since our kitchen countertop become granite. My family member do not use granite countertop at all and they do not have any holes on their shirt. -- Stovetop cooking. Fat splash from cooking. I do cook a lot and do not wear apron. And when I wear apron because I do not want to stain my white shirt, that shirt doesn't get any holes and stay clean without fat or oil splatter. And my family member do not cook at all and they do not have any holes on their shirt. -- Quality of cotton fabric. They become thinner than before I got holes on my shirts. Its just recent like 4 or 5 years ago. Old shirts do not have any holes so far. Exception is 2 of my 100% cashmere sweater has holes around my tummy just like cotton top. So from now on, I will wear canvas apron to protect my shirt to see if it will help or not. I do cook a lot with hot oil -- deep frying or stir frying with high temp and it always splatter some oils from cooking. And I do also lean again granite countertop a lot. I hope this info will help someone! |
Are you snagging a thread or fabric in the zipper of your jeans? I don't get holes like that in my tee shirts, my son does get tiny random holes in his tee shirts but they are always caused by some sort of snag.. |
Glad to see this thread! I thought I was crazy.
To add to the evidence: I too get the holes only around the belly button. Have never had granite counter tops. Did have a gas stove when I started getting the holes, now that I think of it. Holes in Gap and H&M shirts. American Apparel have not gotten any holes. My mom also has been getting the holes in the last few years. |
Yep, it is the counter! Thank God and not bugs. I was going to take a match to my dresser if it was bugs. I put a shirt on backwards that had the holes in the front. I went about my business in the kitchen and low and behold- tiny holes. I found a knick in the granite by the sink. I am going to put tape there as someone suggested and just make sure when I am in the kitchen I have an apron or an old raggy shirt when I am doing dishes. Almost everyone of my shirts has the holes! I cannot afford this expensive problem. Finally, though I think this is the answer. |
This is what I come to DCUM for. Thanks, PP, I'm going to dig my aprons out. |
I'm going to try this as well. Would be interesting to see how many cooks get holes in their shirts. |
I've been thinking it could also be my seatbelt rubbing. I spend a lot of time in the car. |
I have this same issue and believe it is the quality of the fabric. This only started happening in the past 2 to 3 years and doesn't seem to matter how expensive the t is. I have used tiny pieces of iron-on patches which worked really well, but it does show a bit. Still better than a hole. I also made a quick stitch through the holes and that looks better than the iron on patch. I blame the clothing industry and all the foreign made imports. Glad to know I'm not alone as misery loves company. |
It is the disinfectant you are putting on your counters. It acts like bleach, weakening the fabric that touches it, ie the shirts that rub along the counter edge, you put the shirt in the wash and the agitation from the machine help to break the threads weak link... Presto holes in your shirt when you next put it on. Apron time is here again.. |
Seriously this problem started after I bought a new washer...I blame the way the washer beats the clothes up! Most of us can't find a large capacity washer with an old style agitator anymore! I don't wear a belt, or Velcro, and i'm thin enough not to be catching my clothes on the kitchen counter. As I said, this problem began when I purchased my new washer. |
And yes, coupled with the washing machine, the fabrics, particularly from Indonesia, develop numerous holes.....and these shirts are purchased at stores like The Gap. I wanted to bring them a bag of my holey shirts, but figured it wasn't worth it. |
