With all of your kids activities in the evenings, there is no way I would have time to shop and cook for these meals and there is no way we are home 5 nights a week for a complete sit down meal.

Amen to that!!

Are you much of a cook to begin with? I think that's where the divide in this thread is coming from. Cooking really is effortless and enjoyable for a lot of people, including me. I work full-time, have no housekeeper or yard person, and cook almost every night. But then, my husband does the laundry....

How long do you have between the time you walk through the door and dinner has to be on the table? And how old are your kids?

not fantasy at all. I SAHM with three boys, a housecleaner once a week and we absolutely eat well. I plan out our meals on Sundays and shop Monday morning after dropping the boys off. I prep as much as I can during the day. We aren"t together for dinner most nights either, but I still make sure the kids eat well and my husband and/or I eat later in the evening. We have activites 7 days a week. For example, this week on Monday I made chicken soup-used a whole chicken. Had that for dinner with matzah balls, salad and bread Leftover chicken I made enchiladas side of whole grain chips and salsa and black bean and corn salad-Tues night. This was Wed night too. Tonight a curried rice and chicken dish with peas. Fri night we are all going to a Halloween party potluck thing so need to cook. I make about three or four meals a week. All about planning.

Cooking is not for everyone and some of the dishes listed here are possible if you plan well, and actually love to cook; it is not a chore.

To those who commented cooking is old fashioned or 1060's, I say I am fine with that. A home cooked meal (IMO) is far much better than eating out or take out any day. It can even be an opportunity to teach your kids how to cook for themselves - if you feel that is something you want to pass on to them. And for the record, not being judgemental, just saying what works for me.

I am a SAHM too-I already replied to your post on the last page, but now I am curious-why do you eat? Is it fast food, frozen packaged food, if not cooking what are you eating?

That is very sad.

Your kids must not play sports. Have you seen the little league field lights on at 9pm during the week? You know it's not uncommon for high schoolers to get home after 8 pm with sports and other activities? That's just the way it is for some kids.

Here's the mushroom risotto recipe:
Ingredients
2 cups arborio rice
1 cup white wine
4 cups vegetable broth
1 (10.75-ounce) can condensed golden mushroom soup
1 teaspoon minced garlic
6 ounces mushrooms, sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 cup grated Parmesan

Directions
Stir together all ingredients, except Parmesan, in slow cooker.
Cook on high, stirring every 30 minutes for 2 hours.
Check consistency. Continue to cook, stirring every 10 to 15 minutes for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Be careful not to overcook risotto. (Rice should be al dente, not mushy.)
Stir in Parmesan before serving.

The SAHM with kids in school is not the way most of us live. Here was our week:

TorteLlini and chicken patties and salad
Hot dogs and salad
Pasta and chicken sausage
Frozen pizza and salad
Scrambled eggs
Anonymous
Mon - beef in crock pot, mashed potatoes, brocolli
Tue - work dinner
Wed - pulled beef from Mon night w/ BBQ in tortilla w/ salad
Thur - pizza
Fri - jambalaya w/ kielbasa

SAHM with two kids and activities. I try to plan and prepare most of the things in advance and most of the time we eat dinner together.

always an excuse-there seem to be plenty of working moms on this board who seem to do an amazing job with dinner. Just as easy to marinate some chicken before work and cook it and prepare a simple side dish of whole grains/veggies as it is to prepare a hot dog

I wasn't making any excuses. I just think that the SAHM with kids in school who posted how easy it is to shop and cook is in an unusual situation. I didn't say working parents couldn't cook chicken.

The number of judgmental and superior women on DCUM never ceases to amaze me.

My kids are 14 and 11 and they play sports.

I still think that it is sad that a family cannot manage to sit down and eat together most nights a week. Study after study shows the importance of having dinner with our kids every night. Besides, it's fun.
